The first quarterfinal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup brings together two familiar faces as France and Morocco meet in Boston with a place in the semifinals at stake. The fixture immediately evokes memories of their 2022 World Cup semifinal, where France claimed a 2-0 victory before eventually finishing as runners-up. Four years later, Morocco have once again emerged as one of the tournament's biggest stories, while France remain among the favourites to lift the trophy.

France have historically dominated this fixture. The nations have met on numerous occasions, with France remaining unbeaten against Morocco in official competition. Their most notable encounter came in the 2022 FIFA World Cup semifinals, where goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani secured a 2-0 victory for Les Bleus. Morocco, however, will draw confidence from their remarkable progress over the past four years, having now reached consecutive World Cup quarterfinals. Still, Morocco are yet to beat France (W0 D2 L4).
France team overview
Didier Deschamps' side have looked one of the tournament's strongest teams despite being tested more seriously in the Round of 16. After progressing comfortably through the group stage, France defeated Sweden 3-0 before edging Paraguay 1-0 thanks to Kylian Mbappé's second-half penalty. Paraguay frustrated France for long spells, restricting them to very few clear opportunities, but Les Bleus once again demonstrated their ability to grind out results when not at their fluent best.
France have now won all five of their World Cup matches, conceding just two goals while scoring in every game. Mbappé remains the tournament's joint-leading scorer with seven goals and continues to be France's biggest attacking threat.
There are, however, a few concerns ahead of the quarterfinal. Aurélien Tchouaméni has been dealing with an injury that ruled him out against Paraguay, while Bradley Barcola, Manu Koné and Michael Olise all carry yellow cards, meaning another booking would result in suspension for a potential semifinal. The excellent impact of substitute Désiré Doué against Paraguay gives Deschamps another valuable attacking option should changes be required.

Morocco team overview
Morocco continue to cement their reputation as one of international football's most difficult teams to break down. After eliminating the Netherlands on penalties in the Round of 32, the Atlas Lions produced arguably their best performance of the tournament by defeating co-hosts Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi starred with two excellent goals before Soufiane Rahimi sealed victory in stoppage time.
The North Africans remain unbeaten throughout the tournament and have conceded very few quality chances. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has successfully built upon Morocco's defensive foundations while adding greater attacking flexibility, with Ounahi operating in a more advanced role and Brahim Díaz providing creativity between the lines.
The main injury concern surrounds Ismael Saibari, who suffered a fitness issue against Canada and remains doubtful for the quarterfinal. His absence would remove an important outlet in transition, although Rahimi proved an able replacement after coming off the bench in the previous round. Achraf Hakimi continues to provide enormous attacking width from right-back while also leading Morocco's defensive organisation.

Prediction
France should edge a hard-fought contest and book their place in the semifinals, but Morocco are capable of getting on the scoresheet given their impressive attacking form, having scored in every World Cup match so far.
Prediction: Both Teams to Score - BTTS.
Three reasons we expect BTTS
- Morocco have scored in every World Cup match so far.
- France have failed to keep a clean sheet against both Senegal and Norway.
