- Venue: City Ground
Nottingham Forest head into Sunday’s game knowing one win could, well, almost guarantee Premier League survival. That pressure will hang over the City Ground from kickoff. Newcastle United arrive a little calmer, though the mood around the Magpies still feels oddly lifeless. Eddie Howe’s side talked about pushing on after reaching the Champions League last year. Instead, the season has drifted. Forest sit 16th, Newcastle 13th, and honestly, neither fanbase is likely to look back on this campaign with much warmth. The bookmakers cannot really split the two sides either, which feels fair. Forest have become stubborn at home, while Eddie Howe’s side still carry attacking threat even when performances wobble.

Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United have faced each other 12 times since 2016. The Magpies have won seven of those meetings and, interestingly enough, each of the last three. Forest picked up three victories, while two matches ended level. Goals usually follow this fixture too, with an average of 3.67 per game.
Nottingham Forest team overview
Forest come into this game in surprisingly solid form. The Tricky Trees have lost only once in their last 11 matches, although that defeat still stings a bit.
Vítor Pereira’s men were hammered 4-0 by Aston Villa in the Europa League semi-final second leg after taking a narrow first-leg advantage at the City Ground. It was the sort of collapse supporters will replay in their heads all summer.
Still, home form has been encouraging. Forest are unbeaten in five at the City Ground and have won the last three there. Morgan Gibbs-White remains a major talking point after that ugly collision with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. He only made the bench in midweek and still looks doubtful here.
Pereira may rotate anyway. Taiwo Awoniyi could replace Chris Wood up front, while Dilane Bakwa and Igor Jesus may start in the wide areas. Dan Ndoye, Murillo and Ola Aina are all unavailable through injury.

Newcastle United team overview
Newcastle finally stopped the slide with a 3-1 win over Brighton last weekend. After five straight defeats, the response was badly needed.
Eddie Howe’s side started aggressively and scored twice inside the opening 24 minutes, which probably helped settle a few nerves around St James’ Park.
There is not much left for the Magpies to chase now, apart from finishing respectably and avoiding another miserable run before summer. Away form remains a concern though.
Newcastle have lost four of the last five on the road, and some of those performances looked oddly flat for a squad with this much quality.
Anthony Gordon returned to the bench against Brighton and should be pushing for a start at the City Ground. That could give Newcastle more directness in transition.
Emil Krafth is still sidelined with a long-term knee problem, while Fabian Schär, Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley are also expected to miss out.

Prediction
A 2-2 draw probably feels like the logical outcome here, even if neither manager would gladly take it before kickoff. Forest have become awkward opponents at the City Ground lately. Teams rarely leave comfortably. Still, clean sheets are another matter, especially against a Newcastle side with quick forwards and dangerous runners. The Magpies, however, have lost four of the last five away from home and continue to look uncertain at the back. That usually leads to goals, sometimes messy ones.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals
- Five of the last six games of Newcastle United finished with over 2.5 goals.
- Four of the last five games of Nottingham Forest produced 4+ goals.
- Six of the last seven meetings between Forest and Newcastle ended with three or more goals.
Main prediction Nottingham Forest - Newcastle United
