Freiburg travel to Hamburg on Sunday with far more pressure hanging over the fixture. The visitors are still fighting for a European place, and with Frankfurt sitting just one point behind, there is not much room for mistakes now. Hamburger have already done the hard part by securing survival. After seven frustrating years outside the Bundesliga, simply staying up probably feels like a small victory in itself. Still, home supporters will want a stronger finish because recent performances at Volksparkstadion have been, well, slightly worrying.

Bundesliga
Hamburger and Freiburg have met 10 times competitively since 2014. Freiburg hold the advantage with four victories and have won the last three meetings in a row. HSV managed two wins, while four matches ended level. Goals have not exactly been rare either, with an average of 2.8 per game.
Hamburger SV team overview
Hamburger returned to the Bundesliga this season after finally escaping the second division with a second-place finish last year. For most supporters, avoiding an immediate return to the 2. Bundesliga would always have been the main target. Die Rothosen have now achieved that with two matches still left to play.
Merlin Polzin’s side sit eight points clear of the relegation places and come into this fixture after a valuable 2-1 comeback win against Eintracht Frankfurt. That result ended a rough run of three consecutive defeats and probably settled a few nerves around the club.
Even so, home form remains a concern. HSV are without a win in five matches at Volksparkstadion, losing three of those games. Fábio Vieira scored again last weekend and now has six goals for the season.
He is expected to continue alongside Robert Glatzel and Ransford Königsdörffer in attack. Fernando Dickes, Miro Muheim, Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit and William Mikelbrencis remain unavailable through injury.

Freiburg team overview
Freiburg arrive in Hamburg with a mixture of relief and exhaustion after their dramatic 3-1 win over Braga in the Europa League semi-final.
The Breisgau-Brasilianer went behind early, looked uncomfortable for long spells, then suddenly found another level after the break. It was their first win in five matches and also the first time in six games that Schuster’s side managed to score three goals.
Still, the away form is difficult to ignore. Freiburg have lost each of their last three away matches, conceding eight goals across that stretch while scoring only twice themselves. That imbalance has become a real issue lately.
With the Europa League final now sitting in the background, Julian Schuster may rotate a few names here. Igor Matanović could still keep his place in attack after a strong recent display. Max Rosenfelder, Patrick Osterhage and Yuito Suzuki are all expected to miss out through injury.

Prediction
A 2-2 draw feels like a reasonable reading of this one, even if neither defence fully agrees. Hamburger have failed to win any of their last five home matches, yet still score enough to stay awkward. Freiburg’s away form has dipped badly with three straight losses and eight goals conceded, though their attack rarely stays quiet for long.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals
- Five of the last six games of Hamburger finished with three or more goals.
- Only two of the last 12 games of Freiburg produced less than three goals.
- Each of the last four meetings between Hamburger and Freiburg produced 3+ goals.
Main prediction Hamburger SV - SC Freiburg
