Germany continue their World Cup preparations with a friendly fixture on Sunday evening when they take on Finland.

The MEWA Arena is the venue for Sunday’s international with Germany looking to build on a pair of friendly victories picked up in March while the Finns come into the fixture after narrowly missing out on tournament success at the FIFA series.

The Germans have enjoyed the better of this fixture in years gone by and anything other than a comfortable home win would be a big surprise this weekend.

Germany

Germany team overview

Germany face their penultimate friendly fixture before the World Cup kick-off in two weeks with plenty of confidence after a strong winning run in the past year.

Die Mannschaft have picked up seven successive victories, scoring 22 goals in the process. The Germans claimed friendly victories against Switzerland (4:3) and Ghana (2:1) after five successive  World Cup qualification wins since a 2:0 defeat against Slovakia nine months ago.

High-scoring outcomes can usually be expected when Julian Nagelsmann’s men are involved. Eight of their last 12 games finished with at least three goals scored while only one of seven previous home Internationals did not finish with over 2.5 goals.

Head coach Nagelsmann has a 25-man squad available this weekend. Kai Havertz misses out but will join up with the squad after Arsenal’s Champions League final appearance on Saturday.

Finland

Finland team overview

Finland make the trip to Germany after a decent showing at the FIFA Series in March. Jacob Friis’s men claimed a 2:0 win against New Zealand before a penalty shootout defeat against Cabo Verde.

A disappointing World Cup qualification campaign saw Finland finish third in their UEFA qualifying section, with just ten points picked up from eight games. The Finns lost four of those internationals.

On the road, Friis’s side suffered heavy defeats against Netherlands (4:0) and Poland (3:1) and a similar outcome seems likely in this weekend’s friendly contest.

Head coach Friis has a 27-man squad available for Sunday’s matchup. Experienced goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky is poised to win his 104th cap at MEWA Arena.

Prediction

Germany will be keen to put on a winning performance in front of their own fans and I expect a dominant win on Sunday.

I have my stakes on the hosts to win with a minimum of three match goals.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Germany Win/Over 2.5 Goals

  1. Germany won their last 7 matches
  2. Germany have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 7 matches
  3. Finland lost 4 of their last 8 matches
