About Dimitrios Goutas

About Dimitrios Goutas

Standing at an imposing 1.93m and boasting a lean athletic figure, Goutas catches the eye before setting foot on a pitch.

The Bluebirds signed the Greek international this summer, picking him up on a free transfer in what could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer window.

His career began at Xanthi FC, where he became a regular fixture for the now-troubled Greek side, which recently had to resign from the Greek Super Lig 2 due to financial difficulties. He made 77 appearances in three seasons, and his excellent form attracted the interest of Olympiacos, who parted with €800,000 to secure his services in the summer of 2015.

He was immediately loaned back to Xanthi in 2016, and a further three loan deals followed as he tried to find regular playing time. He spent time with Belgian First Division clubs Kortrijk and Sint-Truiden before signing for Polish giants Lech Poznan for a season-long loan in 2018.

His most solid run of form came with Svissapor, where he made 63 appearances and bagged five goals - a good return for a defender.

What's Next

It's a massive season for Cardiff - the signing of Welsh superstar Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer filling fans with hope of a successful season.

New Cardiff boss Erol Bulut believes Goutas has the characteristics needed to succeed in Wales.

He said: "Dimitri has a lot of experience. He has played for Olympiacos and the Greek national team. He can organise from the back and he is a good size for the Championship. He also has good speed, so I think he will be a very useful player for our style."

Goutas was thrown right in the deep end on debut, making his first start for his new club against Leeds at a boisterous Elland Road in the opening weekend of the Championship season.

He impressed and almost helped his team to a surprise victory away from home - only a last-gasp Crysencio Summerville equaliser prevented them from taking three points back down the M1.

About Cardiff City

Cardiff City Football Club, a beacon of Welsh pride, was founded in 1899 as Riverside A.F.C. by Bartley Wilson. They adopted their current name in 1908 and climbed the tiers of British football, gracing the First Division in 1921. The Bluebirds experienced their golden era in the 1920s, notably winning the FA Cup in 1927 - a feat unequalled by any other non-English club. Despite ups and downs, including periods in lower divisions, the indomitable spirit of Cardiff City sustains them, echoing the passion of their vehement supporters.
