Slovakia return to international action on Monday after a 2-0 friendly win against Romania in their most recent fixture at the end of March. Middlesbrough forward David Strelec bagged his tenth international goal as the Slovaks bounced back from World Cup qualification heartbreak.

After beginning their campaign with a sensational 2-0 win against Germany, Vladimir Weiss’s side missed out on automatic qualification following a revenge defeat against the Germans before suffering a dramatic 4-3 playoff loss to Kosovo.

Before their recent qualification defeats, Slovakia had won four of their previous five matches, keeping clean sheets in each of those victories. Including the recent win against Romania, Weiss’s side have won by more than one goal in three of their last five victories, while all five wins during that period came alongside clean sheets.

Head coach Weiss has an experienced squad available this week. Stoke forward Róbert Boženík has not been included in the selection.

Malta make the trip to Slovakia looking for an improvement in performance after back-to-back Nations League defeats against Luxembourg in March. 

Having slipped to a 2:0 home reversal, the Maltese then fell to a 3:0 defeat in the return contest five days later. Joseph Mbong saw red on a miserable day for Emilio de Leo’s side. 

A poor run of form since October last year has seen Malta lose five of six international fixtures. Malta lost by more than one goal in all but one of their last seven defeats while they leaked three goals or more in four of their last five reversals. 

Head coach de Leo has a 24-man squad available this week. Joseph Mbong is suspended after his red card against Luxembourg in March.
