The Netherlands host Algeria in Rotterdam on Wednesday evening for what feels like a worthwhile rehearsal before the World Cup begins later this month. Both nations topped their qualifying groups, so confidence is hardly in short supply. The Dutch look stronger on paper, ranking seventh in the world compared to Algeria's 28th. That helps explain the bookmakers' view. Still, friendlies often take on a life of their own, which makes the less obvious betting markets worth a closer look.
Netherlands vs Algeria H2H stats
It is a slightly odd detail, but the Netherlands and Algeria senior teams have never actually met before. For all their long football histories, this is the first time they share a pitch at this level. That unfamiliarity might matter a little, or maybe it fades once the game settles.
Netherlands team overview
The Netherlands have quietly rebuilt into a very dangerous side. The Oranje now look capable of troubling almost anyone on their day. A World Cup quarter-final appearance hinted at that progress. Qualification only strengthened the impression. Ronald Koeman's men moved through the campaign with little real difficulty.
The Dutch finished top of their group without losing a match. Six wins from eight games is a strong return. The attack, however, is what stands out most. The Oranje scored four or more goals in four qualifiers. That level of firepower is hard to ignore. Since a 4-0 victory over Lithuania sealed qualification, Koeman's side have beaten Norway 2-1 and drawn 1-1 with Ecuador.
Denzel Dumfries is expected to miss out after his red card against Ecuador. Even so, the squad remains packed with talent. With Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Aké, Ryan Gravenberch, Tijjani Reijnders, Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons available, the Dutch look well equipped across the pitch.

Algeria team overview
Algeria come into this game with a fair bit of quiet confidence, and you can see why. The Desert Foxes lost only once across ten qualifying matches. At times, they looked very controlled, almost methodical, though maybe a little too cautious when breaking quickly.
The Africa Cup of Nations added another layer to that picture. Vladimir Petković's side reached the quarter-finals before a 2-0 loss to Nigeria ended the run. Since then, there have been mixed signals. A 7-0 win over Guatemala showed real attacking bite. A 0-0 draw with Uruguay, however, raised the familiar question of how well this team unlocks compact defences.
There is a decent balance in the squad. Riyad Mahrez still feels like the main creative reference point. Amine Gouiri brings sharper movement in the final third. Luca Zidane’s inclusion in goal adds an interesting subplot, even if it is still unclear how that role will fully develop.

Prediction
A 3-1 Netherlands win probably fits the recent pattern, though it is not entirely cut and dry. Koeman's side have hit 19 goals in their last six games and stayed unbeaten throughout. Algeria usually compete well and do not fade easily. Mahrez and Gouiri can still cause problems. However, the Dutch attacking rhythm looks a bit more reliable, and that edge might end up deciding it.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals in this game
- Netherlands failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last eight matches.
- Algeria failed to score in only three of their last five matches.
- Five of the last seven games of Netherlands produced over 2.5 goals.
