The last game of the World Cup 1/16 Finals will see Colombia face Ghana on the night between Friday and Saturday. Colombia topped their group with Portugal, DR Congo, and Uzbekistan with seven points, while Ghana was one of the 3rd-placed teams to advance after finishing 3rd in their group with England, Croatia, and Panama.
Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this World Cup 1/16 Finals tie.
Colombia team overview
Colombia came to the tournament as Copa America vice-champions and 3rd-placed team in the South American Qualifiers. The popular Tricolors truly delivered in the Group stage, but the most impressive display was in the last game against Portugal. Yes, they drew 0:0, but they were a better team in my opinion, as they had 1.74 xG compared to Portugal's 0.92, 55% ball possession, and 24 goal attempts, compared to Portugal's 13. Some of the football pundits addressed their defense as their weak point, but we haven't seen that in the World Cup thus far, allowing just one goal.
After a goalless draw with Portugal, coach Néstor Lorenzo spoke to the media. He said they were a better team and deserved to win, as he felt they controlled the large stretches of the game and had better chances. The coach praised their tactical organization, defensive discipline, and ability to maintain intensity in difficult weather conditions.

Ghana team overview
Ghana came to the World Cup after a pretty easy qualification and an atrocious preparation period. Even in the first game, where they won 1:0 against Panama, they did not impress. Still, that win and an impressive draw with England secured them a place in the knockout phase. In fact, that win against Panama is their only one in the last nine games! However, they have shown they can defend well against a low block, and it will be interesting to see if they can repeat that defensive performance against Colombia's strong, creative offense.
After a 2:1 loss to Croatia, coach Carlos Queiroz spoke to the media. He was positive despite the loss, saying it was a learning experience for them. However, considering they secured the knockout phase, he wasn't too unhappy. The coach said there is some tactical adjustment to be made, but also emphasized that "The real World Championship starts in the next game".

Prediction
Colombia were impressive, winning two and drawing one. Interestingly, the most impressive result was the draw, considering who they faced. A 0-0 draw against Portugal in a game where they were a lot better and deserved a win is not something that many teams can do. Also, looking further back, over the past 16 games, they only lost to Croatia and France and won nine of them while facing mostly excellent teams.
Ghana did well to secure a knockout phase. However, we cannot say they were too impressive, even though they are looking better and better as the tournament progresses. Still, looking at their recent results, they lost six of the past nine games, and their only win during that time came against poor Panama.
We expect Colombia to have possession, while Ghana will probably defend in a low block and try to create something from the counters. Still, we believe Colombia will score eventually, and if Ghana opens up, Colombia will have more space and win comfortably.
3 Reasons why Colombia should win and cover the -1 AH spread
- Colombia won seven points in the first three games
- Colombia won nine of the past 14 games across competitions
- Ghana lost six of the past nine games
