World Cup knockout action takes place in Vancouver on Friday as Switzerland and Algeria go head-to-head with a place in the last sixteen on the line in Canada.

Switzerland arrive at BC Place after topping Group B with seven points while remaining unbeaten in games against Canada, Bosnia and Qatar.

Likewise, Algeria secured their place in the round of 32 after a thrilling draw against Austria in their final Group J fixture.

With Switzerland looking strong in the final third and Algeria showing plenty of attacking threat in their last two matches, an entertaining contest is expected at BC Place.

Switzerland vs Algeria H2H stats

Switzerland and Algeria have met on two previous occasions. Switzerland won both of those meetings, claiming friendly victories in 1983 and 1986.

Switzerland

Switzerland team overview

Switzerland make the trip to Vancouver after an impressive 2:1 win against Canada in their final Group B fixture. Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored second-half goals as Murat Yakin’s side secured top spot in the section.

Before that victory, the Swiss had also claimed a dominant 4:1 win against Bosnia after opening their campaign with a 1:1 draw against Qatar. Seven points from three matches was enough to send Yakin’s side through as Group B winners.

Switzerland have looked dangerous in the final third, scoring seven goals in their three group fixtures. Over a longer period, the Swiss have averaged over two goals per game in their last ten matches.

Defensive issues remain a concern, though. Switzerland have conceded at least one goal in eight of their last nine matches. All eight games finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

Yakin is likely to keep faith with much of the side that started against Canada. Silvan Widmer is the only reported injury worry for the Europeans.

Algeria

Algeria team overview

Algeria arrive in Vancouver after a truly remarkable 3:3 draw against Austria secured their place in the knockout phase. Riyad Mahrez appeared to have sent the Desert Foxes through with a stoppage-time goal, only for Austria to equalise almost immediately in a thrilling finish.

With both teams needing a point to progress, a tight contest had been expected, but both teams showed their quality in a fascinating World Cup clash.

Petkovic’s side had started their World Cup campaign with a 3:0 defeat against Argentina, but responded well with a 2:1 victory against Jordan. Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri scored in that comeback win, with Mahrez also influential after returning to the starting XI.

Like the Swiss, defensive issues remain a concern. Algeria conceded six goals in Group J, and they could struggle to contain an attack that has scored freely in this tournament. Both of their last two matches finished with BTTS, and a similar outcome could be on the cards in Canada.

Head coach Petkovic has one confirmed absentee. Mohamed Amoura misses out with a hamstring issue.

Prediction

Both nations will fancy their chances in what should prove a competitive and evenly-balanced World Cup knockout contest.

BTTS is my best bet for Thursday’s clash at BC Place.

Four Reasons Why We Expect BTTS

  1. Switzerland have seen BTTS in 8 of their last 9 matches
  2. Algeria have seen BTTS in their last 2 matches
  3. Algeria scored five goals in their last two World Cup fixtures
  4. Switzerland conceded in all three of their World Cup group matches
