Major sports events in August 2026

The last month of the summer will have no shortage of various sports events, and every fan will find something worth watching. The snooker season kicks off with the 2026 Satuo China Open, PSG and Aston Villa will battle for the UEFA Super Cup, and Islam Makhachev will try to defend his welterweight championship at UFC 330. MightyTips previews the biggest sporting events taking place in August.

While the snooker season kicked off with the Championship League, this ranking event, won by Jak Jones, was ignored by pretty much all the top players. The China Open is a completely different story, as all the best players will head to Taiyuan. Even Ronnie O’Sullivan, the 14th seed, should play in China. Neil Robertson is the top seed as the defending champion, while the current world champion, Wu Yize, is seeded second. The non-ranking Shanghai Masters, played between July 27 and August 2, should give some clues about the current form of the top contenders.

The UEFA Super Cup is a single match between the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League. This event kick-starts the new European season, as all three main UEFA club competitions will begin in less than a month. This year, Paris Saint-Germain, the winners of the Champions League for the second year in a row, will play against Aston Villa, who have claimed the Europa League trophy. PSG won the UEFA Super Cup in 2025, beating Tottenham on penalties. Aston Villa claimed this trophy in 1982, their sole appearance; however, their coach, Unai Emery, has lost all four UEFA Super Cup matches with Sevilla and Villarreal.

UFC 330 will take place in the middle of the month at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Islam Makhachev will defend his welterweight championship against Ian Machado Garry, while another title fight will feature Mackenzie Dern against Gillian Robertson for the women’s strawweight championship. Other notable names on the card include Jalin Turner, Erin Blanchfield, Edson Barboza, Vicente Luque, and Geoff Neal. We’ll have a detailed preview of this event, just like we do for all the numbered ones.

The 34th edition of the biennial continental tournament, organised by CEV, will be played in four countries: Azerbaijan, Czechia, Sweden and Turkey. The latter will try to defend their maiden title, as they became European champions for the first time in 2023, defeating the Netherlands in the final. 24 teams will take part in the competition, as Montenegro are set for their first-ever appearance, while Austria and Latvia are back after long waits. The play-off matches are scheduled in Brno and Istanbul, the place for the semi-finals, third-place match and the final.

The Formula 1 season resumes after the summer break with the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort, one of the calendar’s most challenging and atmospheric venues. The championship battle remains intense, with Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli leading the drivers' standings ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while George Russell and Charles Leclerc remain within striking distance. Max Verstappen will once again enjoy massive home support as he aims to reignite his title challenge at Red Bull’s home race. The narrow, undulating circuit leaves little room for mistakes, making qualifying crucial and strategy equally important. With several teams introducing upgrades after the break, the Dutch Grand Prix could prove pivotal in shaping the championship fight before the final stretch of the 2026 season.

The final Grand Slam of the season returns to New York, where the world’s best players will compete for one of tennis’ most prestigious titles. One of the biggest storylines is the return of Carlos Alcaraz, who missed both Roland Garros and Wimbledon through injury. The defending US Open champion is the second favourite in the outright betting behind Jannik Sinner, with odds of around 2.87 at most major sportsbooks. If Alcaraz rediscovers his best form, his explosive all-court game could make him the man to beat in Flushing Meadows despite his recent absence.
