  • Kick-off: 19:30 UK / 20:30 CET
  • Venue: Molineux Stadium

Two sides stuck in the lower end of the Premier League table meet on Wednesday evening, as Wolves welcome Nottingham Forest to Molineux. The gap between them is ten points, which feels larger than it sounds when you see the hosts rooted to the bottom and Forest hanging just above danger in sixteenth. This preview leans on form, injuries and a few betting angles.

These two have met nine times since 2018, and five of the last six came in the Premier League. The record between them is almost awkwardly equal. The sides shared two wins apiece and five matches ended level. If you’re a fan of numbers, the games have averaged 2.44 goals, a fair distance from total bedlam, but hardly a dullsville.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves team overview

The Wanderers have held on for a seventh consecutive season since their ascent out of the Championship in 2017–18. They even took advantage of that early crest to finish seventh twice in a row, which now seems strange and remote.

The last couple of years have been harder, however, finishing fourteenth and then sixteenth respectively with things slipping further this season. Rob Edwards’ men occupy the foot of the table after 13 matches, with no league win to their name and more losses than anyone else.

Ironically, the Wanderers at least showed some spark in the League Cup with two home wins so, for once, there is at least some motivation going into a game at Molineux.

In terms of the squad, Rodrigo Gomes is out until February with a groin injury and Ki-Jana Hoever and Matt Doherty are both missing with knee and muscle issues.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest team overview

Forest secured Europa League football for the first time in their history, thanks to a seventh-place finish last season. But Nuno Espírito Santo, the man who took them there, was fired earlier this season after a poor run of results.

Sean Dyche replaced him, and though his beginning has been hit and miss, the betterment is real enough. There are standout wins in Europe - against Porto and Malmö - and victories over Leeds and even Liverpool in league play, to restore some sense of direction to his side again.

The Tricky Trees enter Wednesday’s match hoping to rebound from their first loss in four games, 2–0 at the hands of Brighton. Morgan Gibbs-White is feeling his back a little bit but hopefully he can get through to Molineux.

Ola Aina and Dilane Bakwa are both still working their way back from hamstring issues, meanwhile, and are unlikely to feature in the first-team any time soon, with Oleksandr Zinchenko, Douglas Luiz among other injury absentees as well as goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Prediction

A tight 1–1 draw looks pretty plausible here, especially as both teams have been recording similar numbers of goals at both ends in recent weeks. Both teams are averaging around a goal per match over their last six games which suggests that it will be a low-scoring affair where neither team runs away with the match. Recent meetings between these two teams have also tilted toward less-than-expansive football, the results often turning on individual bursts rather than total dominance.

Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game

  1. At least one side failed to score in four of the last five games of Forest.
  2. Just two of the last seven meetings between Wolves and Forest produced more than two goals.
  3. Wolves have failed to score in each of their last four matches.
