Two nations who both failed to qualify for the World Cup meet on Thursday evening in Cádiz as Northern Ireland take on Guinea. The Green and White Army crashed out in the playoffs semi final, while the Guineans finished fourth in Group G of African qualifiers. Bookmakers are not quite sure of who the clear favorites are but let’s look in the forms of both sides and see the best betting angles.
Northern Ireland vs Guinea H2H stats
This will be the first ever senior international meeting between Northern Ireland and Guinea. Interestingly, Guinea become only the fourth African nation that Northern Ireland's men's team have faced in a full international fixture, following encounters with South Africa, Algeria, and Morocco.
Northern Ireland team overview
Northern Ireland’s long wait for a World Cup return still drags on, and you can almost feel how 1986 sits in the background like a reference point people keep circling back to. The Green and White Army did manage three wins in the latest qualifying campaign and finished third in their group, which sounds respectable enough on paper, though it still ended with a 2-0 playoff defeat to Italy. Hard to shake that feeling of “almost, but not quite.
Soon after, there was that friendly with Wales. Michael O’Neill’s side actually went into the break ahead, which briefly raised hopes, but the lead slipped away and it finished level. That, in a way, feels familiar. Not quite enough cutting edge, not quite enough control when it matters.
Jamie Reid, joint top scorer in qualifying with just two goals, is likely to start again. And injuries are not helping either. Dan Ballard, Paddy McNair, George Saville, Eoin Toal and Terry Devlin are all out, so O’Neill is left weighing up options that may feel a bit improvised rather than settled.

Guinea team overview
Guinea are still chasing that first World Cup appearance, and this friendly feels like another small checkpoint rather than anything decisive. The National Elephants picked up 15 points from 10 qualifying games, which, depending on how you looked at it, was either steady or slightly frustrating.
They were often in matches, just not quite able to finish the job when it mattered, and that fourth place in Group G kind of sums it up.
Since qualifying, things have been a bit uneven. Michel Dussuyer’s side will show spells where they look tidy and organised, then you get games like the 1-0 defeat to Benin where everything feels just a touch blunt in the final third.
Serhou Guirassy is still the obvious reference point up front, and you do get the sense everything leans toward him when Guinea need a goal. Around him, though, it’s less settled, especially with injuries piling up. Ilaix Moriba, Abdoulaye Touré, Issiaga Sylla and Mohamed Mady Camara are all out, which leaves Dussuyer juggling options in midfield more than he would probably like.

Prediction
There is not a great deal between these teams going into Thursday’s friendly in Cádiz. The Green and White Army have been difficult to beat, but three draws from their last six matches, including a 1-1 stalemate with Wales, hint at a side that has struggled to turn decent performances into wins. Guinea find themselves in a similar position. With both nations missing influential players and neither attack firing consistently, this could become a cautious affair. A draw feels the safest call, and a 1-1 scoreline would hardly be a surprise.
Three reasons we expect under 2.5 goals in this game
- None of the last four friendlies of Guinea produced more than two goals.
- Bets on under 2.5 goals won in each of the last six games of Northern Ireland.
- Northern Ireland scored more than once in just one of their last seven games.
Main prediction Northern Ireland - Guinea
Under 2.5 goals
