On Tuesday evening, a League Two side, Grimsby, will welcome a League One team, Doncaster, in the second round of the EFL Trophy. The hosts are aiming to extend their winning streak to three, while the visitors are hoping they can end a five-game winless streak. Still, in the EFL Trophy, Doncaster won the first match 2:1 over Everton U21 and are at the top of the group, while Grimsby lost 2:1 to Bradford City and are in 3rd place.

League Two
These teams met twice last season in League Two. Interestingly, both teams won their road matches. Looking further back, in the last ten games across the competitions, we haven't seen a single draw as each team won five times.
Regarding the number of goals, five out of the last ten ended with three or more goals. Meanwhile, both teams scored in four out of the previous ten h2h meetings.
Grimsby team overview
Grimsby are playing their fourth consecutive season in League Two since dropping out of League One in the 2021/22 season. They had their ups and downs, but eventually failed to even reach the Playoffs. However, this season, the Mariners are doing an excellent job, considering they sit in 3rd place with 21 points from 11 rounds and are currently in the place that leads directly to League One.
In the previous EFL Trophy game against Bradford City, midfielder Henry Brown received a red card and will be suspended for the upcoming match. The coach, David Artell, rotated the squad in the previous EFL Trophy and will most likely do the same against Doncaster.

Doncaster team overview
Doncaster secured promotion last year after a great end of the season, which eventually secured them the title. This season, the popular Rovers aim only to survive. After a great start to the season, they started slowing down, winning only one point in the last five games across the competitions. However, in League One, they are doing a fantastic job as they sit in 10th place with 17 points - just two points away from the Playoffs.
Just like Grimsby, we believe Doncaster will heavily rotate the squad, just like they did in the first game vs Everton U21.

Prediction
Despite being in the lower tier of English football, Grimsby are in a much better spot at the moment. They won back-to-back games against Salford and Cheltenham with an incredible 9:1 goal difference. Also, at home, they have been amazing, winning five out of seven games (although one after penalties). That win on penalties was truly a spectacular one as they beat Manchester United. Yes, it was a bit of a rotated squad from MU, but Grimsby played absolutely great and showed they can compete with teams from higher tiers.
On the other hand, Doncaster won just one point in the last five games and scored just two goals - 0.4 per game. Also, away from home, Doncaster lost three in a row with a terrible 0:7 goal difference.
Considering the difference in form and all the above, we believe the hosts are closer to winning the game.
3 Reasons why Grimsby should win
- Grimsby won the last two games with nine goals scored
- Grimsby won five out of seven home games this season
- Doncaster won one point in the previous five games
