Ecuador and Germany go head-to-head in their final Group E fixture on Thursday evening.

La Tri come into this crucial World Cup clash knowing only a victory will do after collecting just one point from their first two matches.

Contrastingly, Germany arrive in New Jersey already qualified after wins against Curacao and Ivory Coast. Julian Nagelsmann’s side opened with a dominant victory against the Caribbean debutants before edging past Ivory Coast last week.

With Ecuador desperate for three points and Germany already through, an open contest could develop at MetLife Stadium.

Ecuador

Ecuador team overview

Ecuador make the trip to New Jersey after a disappointing 0-0 draw against Curacao. Sebastian Beccacece’s side dominated large spells of the contest but failed to find a breakthrough despite registering 27 efforts on goal and a final xG of 2.74.

La Tri have yet to score at this tournament, and that lack of cutting edge has left them in a difficult position before their final group fixture. Ecuador now know they must beat Germany to have any realistic chance of reaching the knockout rounds.

Billed as pre-tournament dark horses, Ecuador’s struggles in front of goal have been their biggest issue. After a late 1-0 defeat against Ivory Coast, La Tri were then left frustrated by Curacao. Ecuador have now scored just two goals in their last five competitive international fixtures.

Head coach Beccacece could look to freshen up his attack after back-to-back blanks. Kevin Rodriguez, John Yeboah and Alan Minda are among the options pushing for involvement in the final third.

Germany

Germany team overview

Germany arrive at MetLife Stadium with qualification for the round of 32 already secured after taking six points from their first two Group E matches.

Nagelsmann’s side began their campaign with a ruthless 7:1 victory against Curacao before coming from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2:1. Stuttgart striker Deniz Undav stepped off the bench to score in both games, including two goals in the dramatic victory against the Ivorianas.

The Germans have looked dangerous in the final third, scoring nine goals across their first two matches. Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and Undav give Nagelsmann plenty of attacking options for their final Group E contest.

Defensively, Nagelsmann has suffered a blow with Nico Schlotterbeck ruled out for the rest of the tournament after suffering an ankle ligament injury against Ivory Coast. Antonio Rudiger could come into the starting XI alongside Jonathan Tah.

With Germany already qualified, Nagelsmann is expected to consider rotating some of his key players before the knockout rounds.

Prediction

Ecuador must win, and while they could be too much to ask, they should get on the scoresheet against a likely rotated German side.

I have my money on BTTS at MetLife Stadium.

Three Reasons Why We Expect BTTS

  1. Germany have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 6 matches
  2. Germany failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 of their last 17 matches
  3. Ecuador must win to maintain their qualification hopes
