Recent form has been mixed, though. Guatemala recorded important victories against El Salvador and Suriname during World Cup qualifying, but they have also struggled against higher-quality opponents. A 7-0 defeat to Algeria in March highlighted some of the defensive vulnerabilities that can emerge when facing technically superior teams with exceptional attacking talent, while a narrow 1-0 loss to Canada demonstrated their ability to remain competitive against stronger opposition.
