An out-of-form Celtic take on Turkish visitors Besiktas on Thursday evening as the Scottish champions look to claim their first European points of the campaign.

The hosts suffered a miserable defeat at Falkirk on Sunday, while Besiktas surrendered a two-goal lead in an entertaining draw against Kasimpasa.

Both teams have been involved in several high-scoring contests this season and another entertaining Europa League encounter is expected in Glasgow.

Celtic

Celtic team overview

Celtic return to Europa League business action after a shock 2:0 Scottish Premiership defeat against Falkirk on Sunday afternoon.

Ethan Ross opened the scoring after just three minutes before Scott Tanser doubled the hosts' advantage in the first half. Celtic failed to find a response despite creating several chances in the second period.

Martin O'Neill's side registered 24 attempts and nine shots on target, but former Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain produced an outstanding performance to keep the visitors at bay.

Sunday's defeat followed a frustrating 2:2 home draw against Dundee United four days earlier.

The under-pressure hosts have now lost six of their last ten matches across all competitions.

European results have been particularly disappointing. Celtic lost 3:1 at home to Ferencvaros, 4:1 away to Benfica and 2:1 at home to Celta Vigo in their first three Europa League matches.

High-scoring outcomes have been a recurring theme for the Glasgow giants. Fourteen of their 18 most recent fixtures finished with at least three goals scored.

O'Neill has some injury concerns this week, with the veteran boss unable to call on Alistair Johnston and Yang Hyun-Jun.

Kasper Hogh remains without a goal since August, so Camilo Duran should continue to spearhead the hosts’ attack.

Besiktas

Besiktas team overview

Besiktas make the trip to Glasgow after throwing away a two-goal lead in a 2:2 draw against Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super Lig on Sunday evening.

Leandro Trossard opened the scoring in the 28th minute before Dusan Vlahovic doubled the advantage shortly after the interval.

Claudio Winck reduced the deficit on the hour mark before Marcus Rafferty’s 87th-minute equaliser denied Vincenzo Italiano's side another league victory.

Sunday's result came on the back of a 2:0 home success against Istanbul Basaksehir.

The Black Eagles now sit fourth in the Turkish Super Lig with 19 points from ten games.

On the continent, Besiktas have impressed. The Turks claimed a brilliant 4:1 win against Marseille and a 3:2 win against Hoffenheim before securing a 2:2 draw with Crystal Palace in their third Europa League fixture.

Besiktas now arrive in Glasgow currently eighth in the 36-team league with seven points already on the board.

Like the hosts, high-scoring results have been frequent for the Turks. BTTS and over 2.5 goals landed in six of their last eight fixtures and in all three of their Europa League matches.

Head coach Italiano has some selection issues ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash. Orkun Kokcu, Fabio Miretti and Umit Akdag are expected to miss out, while Vaclav Cerny and Milot Rashica remain doubtful.

Prediction

Celtic have struggled defensively in Europe, conceding nine goals in three defeats, while Besiktas have scored nine times in three unbeaten Europa League matches.

All six Europa League games involving these sides this season have seen BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored and I expect more of the same this week.

I have my first stake on over 2.5 goals, with the BTTS double also appealing.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Over 2.5 Goals

  1. Celtic have seen over 2.5 goals in 14 of their last 18 matches.
  2. Besiktas have seen over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches.
  3. Both teams have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 3 Europa League matches
