Málaga will be looking to secure their first league victory of the 2026/27 campaign when they welcome Racing Santander on Saturday afternoon. The hosts are enduring a difficult start to the season, sitting bottom of the LaLiga table. Racing, meanwhile, occupy 16th place with 11 points and will be eager to improve their disappointing away record.

Recent meetings between these sides have generally favoured Racing Santander, although all of their encounters during this period took place in LaLiga 2 rather than the Spanish top flight.

In their last six encounters since 2022, Racing have recorded three victories, while the remaining three fixtures ended in draws. Málaga are therefore still searching for their first win against Racing during this period.

Their most recent meeting took place in May 2026, when the teams played out a 1-1 draw at La Rosaleda. Racing also secured a convincing 3-0 victory in the reverse fixture in October 2025.

Malaga team overview

Málaga's start to the campaign has been particularly disappointing. Juan Funes' side have collected just five points from 11 matches and remain without a single league victory. They have scored only eight goals, making them one of the least productive attacking teams in the division, while conceding 21.

Their recent league form offers little encouragement, with three defeats and two draws in their last five outings. A 2-5 home loss to Real Sociedad highlighted their defensive shortcomings, while their most recent fixture ended in a 2-1 defeat away to Real Betis.

Málaga's home record is another concern. They have yet to win at La Rosaleda this season, drawing three and losing twice in five league appearances.

Regarding team news, Pablo Martínez returned to partial training on Wednesday and could be available for selection. Joaquín Muñoz also trained normally and is expected to make the squad. Carlos Puga worked separately as a precaution, while Juan Cruz, Aarón Ochoa and Julen Lobete remain injury concerns.

Racing Santander team overview

Racing Santander have also experienced an inconsistent campaign but it has been nowhere near as disappointing as Malaga’s. José Alberto López's team have collected four points from their last four LaLiga outings, and while that is hardly an encouraging return, it is nevertheless something to take comfort from if avoiding relegation remains their primary objective.

Their recent performances have been similarly unpredictable. Racing defeated Espanyol 2-1 but subsequently suffered a 3-0 home defeat against Real Madrid.

Their away form is particularly alarming, having lost all five league matches on their travels, conceding 18 goals and scoring just four in the process. This represents a significant weakness that Málaga could look to exploit.

Racing will also be without several important players. Álvaro Mantilla suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Real Madrid and faces a lengthy absence. Andrés Martín is another confirmed absentee after sustaining a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, defender Manu Hernando is doubtful after missing Wednesday's training session due to illness.

Prediction

Both teams have considerable defensive weaknesses and their respective struggles in front of goal should expect one to result in a low scoring encounter. However, both teams have been defensively vulnerable in the early stages of the season, which should encourage them to adopt a more attacking approach and potentially exploit each other's defensive weaknesses.

Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals.

Three reasons we expect Over 2.5 Goals

  1. Both Málaga and Racing Santander are among the league's worst defensive sides, regularly conceding goals in their matches.
  2. Racing have not been particularly prolific in attack but have been reasonably effective, scoring 15 goals in 11 matches.
  3. Málaga, meanwhile, are still searching for their first league victory of the season and may adopt a more aggressive and determined approach, having also found the net in three consecutive home league matches.
