After successfully eliminating Flora in the first round of the Champions League Qualifiers, Georgian champions Iberia 1999 will face Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava in the second round. Slovan Bratislava are a big favorite to advance before the first leg, as the bookies offer odds around 1.2 for them to advance to the next round of the competition.

Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this Champions League tie.

FC Saburtalo Tbilisi

Iberia 1999 team overview

Iberia 1999 won the title last year, winning back-to-back titles. Before the start of the domestic league, they are once again among the main favorites, along with Torpedo Kutaisi, Dinamo Tbilisi, and Batumi. During the offseason, they made some moves, but we would argue they got slightly worse than last season. They took a step backward, especially on the right full back position, as Armel Zohouri left to join Stade Reims. Last season, he had the second-most minutes in the competitions, and they did not add anyone to replace him, at least for now.

Last season, Iberia 1999 lost in the first round of the Champions League Qualifiers to Malmö and then lost to Levadia in the 2nd round of the Conference League Qualifiers. They generally had very little success in the European Qualifiers and are yet to secure a main phase of any European Qualifiers.

Slovan Bratislava

Slovan Bratislava team overview

Slovan Bratislava had another dominant season in Slovakia, winning the title and leaving the second-placed Dunajka Streda 10 points behind. That is their 25th title in club history and eighth consecutive one!

During the offseason, they made some important moves after their coach, Vladimir Weiss (senior), left to become the Slovak national team coach. As a new head coach, they appointed Ivory Coast legend, Yaya Toure. The 43-year-old was only an assistant manager thus far in his managerial career in clubs such as Olympic Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny, Tottenham Youth, Standard Liege, and Saudi Arabia NT.

In terms of transfers, the club decided to move on some experienced players who had been an important part of the rotation: Robert Mak (35), Guram Kashia (38), and Vladimir Weiss (36). Meanwhile, they added goalkeeper Aleksandar Popovic and left full/wing-back, Samuel Kozlovsky. However, they will most likely not be in the starting lineup, at least at the start of the season.

Winger Nino Marcelli should miss the game with an injury, while César Blackman is questionable as he was with the Panama national team at the World Cup and might get some extra time to rest.

Prediction

Both teams scored in both of Iberia's Champions League Qualifiers games, with Iberia winning 3:2 at home and drawing 2:2 on the road against Flora. If we include two Super Cup games, Iberia 1999 scored in each match and averaged 2.0 goals per game. Also, in European Qualifiers, even though the results were pretty bad, they scored in five out of six home games - 83%. They managed to score against teams like FCSB and Malmö, and definitely have a chance to score in this game.

Slovan Bratislava played five friendlies and scored in four of those. They are a favorite not only to advance but also to win this road game, and it is fair to expect at least one goal against a team that allowed two goals per game against Flora. Moreover, last season Slovan averaged 1.94 goals per game in the domestic league and scored in eight of 12 European games despite facing much stronger competition than Iberia 1999.

Considering all the above, we believe that both teams to score bet is the safest option for this Champions League Qualifiers tie.

4 Reasons why both teams should score

  1. Both teams scored in Iberia's two Champions League Qualifier games
  2. Iberia 1999 scored at least one goal in all four games this season (Super Cup & CL Qualifiers)
  3. Slovan Bratislava scored in four out of five friendly matches
  4. Slovan Bratislava scored in eight out of 12 European games last season
