Deportivo La Coruna take on Osasuna on Monday evening, with both teams looking to improve on disappointing recent league performances.

The hosts secured a Copa del Rey victory against Auriense on Thursday, while Osasuna suffered an away defeat at Sevilla earlier this week.

Both sides have struggled for La Liga victories in recent weeks, and I expect a closely contested encounter in La Coruna.

Deportivo A Coruña

Deportivo La Coruna team overview

Deportivo return to home action following a comfortable 3:0 victory against Auriense in the first round of the Copa del Rey on Thursday evening.

Jonathan Asp-Jensen scored twice before Luismi Cruz added a third as Antonio Hidalgo's side secured serene progress to the next round.

Thursday's win offered a welcome boost after last Saturday's narrow 1:0 league defeat against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano.

Julian Alvarez scored the only goal three minutes after half-time. Deportivo created several chances but were unable to find a leveller thanks to some fine saves from Jan Oblak.

That defeat extended Deportivo's winless La Liga run to six matches. The hosts drew three of those games, while also suffering defeats against Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.

Deportivo now sit 11th in the division with 11 points picked-up from ten matches.

Back in the top flight for the first time since nine years, Hidalgo's men have won only one of their five La Liga fixtures at Abanca-Riazor, although three matches finished as draws.

BTTS landed in four of those five matches but only one game saw more than three goals scored.

Hidalgo has several injury concerns to deal with this week. Top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is unlikely to feature while Marc Casado, Zakaria Eddahchouri and Bright Ede are expected to remain unavailable.

Osasuna

Osasuna team overview

Osasuna make the trip to La Coruna after suffering another away league defeat last week.

Los Rojillos slipped to a disappointing 2:0 loss against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan on Monday evening. Isaac Romero opened the scoring before Felix Correia doubled Sevilla's advantage late in the second half.

Last week’s defeat came after Osasuna had secured a much-needed 2:0 home victory against Racing Santander in Jagoba Arrasate's first match since returning as head coach.

Former boss Luis Miguel Ramis paid the price for Osasuna's poor early-season form when he was dismissed two weeks ago. Los Rojillos had collected just one point from his final five La Liga matches in charge

Osasuna's away record is particularly concerning. The visitors lost four of their five league matches on the road this season, conceding 17 goals in those fixtures.

Arrasate’s men now sit 12th in La Liga with 11 points from ten matches. The visitors trail Deportivo on goal difference only.

The recently-appointed head coach has some selection problems ahead of Monday's encounter. Aimar Oroz, Jorge Herrando and Romain Del Castillo are expected to remain sidelined with various injury issues.

Croatian forward Ante Budimir is likely to lead the attack, while Jonathan Dubasin and Ruben Garcia should keep their places in the visitors forward line.

Prediction

Osassuna have a miserable away record while Deportivo have been unfortunate not to pick up more from their early-season home fixtures.

In a tough-to-call La Liga match, I have my stake on the hosts to pick up a narrow win on Monday evening.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Deportivo to Win

  1. Deportivo La Coruna won 4 of their last 5 home matches against Osasuna
  2. Osasuna lost their last 4 away matches (La Liga)
  3. Osasuna conceded 17 goals in their last 5 away matches (La Liga)
