World Cup knockout action takes place in New Jersey on Tuesday evening as France and Sweden go head-to-head with a place in the last sixteen up for grabs.

The in-form French come into the round of 32 after winning all three of their Group I fixtures. Didier Deschamps’s side now carry the tag of favourites as we approach the business end of the tournament.

Sweden reached the knockout phase as one of the best third-placed teams after a mixed Group F campaign. Graham Potter’s side now face a huge test of their qualities against the dangerous Les Bleus.

With France in superb attacking form and Sweden capable of threatening on the break, an entertaining contest should develop in New Jersey.

France

France team overview

France make the trip to New Jersey after a dominant 4:1 win against Norway in their final Group I fixture. Ousmane Dembele produced a superb first-half hat-trick as Les Bleus made it three wins from three to secure top spot in the section.

Before that victory, France had already booked their place in the knockout phase with excellent wins against Senegal and Iraq. Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the opening victory against Senegal before adding another brace against Iraq.

Les Bleus have looked one of the most dangerous attacking sides at the tournament, scoring ten goals across their three group fixtures. Still, they have remained a little vulnerable defensively, failing to keep clean sheets in eight of their last ten matches. All of those eight games finished with both teams on the score sheet.

France could keep faith with much of the side that swept past Norway. Head coach Didier Deschamps has a couple of fitness concerns before Tuesday’s knockout tie. Marcus Thuram is rated doubtful with a calf issue, while William Saliba is also doubtful because of a back problem.

Sweden

Sweden team overview

Sweden arrive in New Jersey after securing their place in the round of 32 with a 1:1 draw against Japan. Anthony Elanga scored a late equaliser as Graham Potter’s side did enough to progress from Group F in third spot.

The Swedes had started their campaign with an impressive 5:1 victory against Tunisia, but they were then beaten by the same scoreline against the Netherlands.

Sweden have shown they can carry a threat in the final third, but Potter’s side will need to be much stronger defensively against a French attack packed with pace and quality.

Dangerous in the forward areas, the Swedes scored at least one goal in each of their last nine matches. All nine games finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

Head coach Potter has also been dealt a defensive blow with Isak Hien ruled out for the rest of the tournament with a hamstring injury. Benjamin Nygren, Eric Smith and Victor Lindelof are all rated doubtful to feature on Tuesday.

Prediction

France look far stronger than Sweden in every department, and Deschamps’s side should have too much attacking quality in New Jersey.

Sweden usually score, but they are unlikely to deny a dominant French attack and a high-scoring Les Bleus win should be expected.

I have my stake on France to win with over 2.5 goals scored.

Three Reasons Why We Expect France to Win/Over 2.5 Goals

  1. France won 12 of their last 14 matches
  2. France have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 12 matches
  3. Sweden have seen over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches
