FC Basel 1893 come into Thursday’s Super League encounter after a poor performance in their 3:0 defeat at Young Boys last weekend. After a goalless first half, Young Boys asserted their dominance with three unanswered strikes in the second period. 

Stephan Lichtsteiner’s side have struggled to find much form in recent weeks, with three defeats recorded in their last four matches while they have won just one of five previous matches. 

Over a longer period, Basel won five but lost six of their last 12 fixtures, leaving them sixth in the Championship round, ten points behind Basel.

Head coach Lichtsteiner has three expected absentees this week. Evann Senaya and Marwin Hitz are ruled out through injury, while Finn van Breemen is doubtful due to a knock.

FC St. Gallen travel to St. Jakob-Park in confident spirits after a fine 2-1 win at Lugano last weekend. Second-half goals from Mihailo Stevanović (69') and Lukas Görtler (74', pen.) secured an impressive comeback victory for Enrico Maassen’s side.

The Aspen Trees have been in excellent form this year, and in recent performances. St. Gallen won four and lost just one of their last six Super League games, while they have lost just one of 18 competitive fixtures since the start of February. 

A tough side to beat, particularly on their travels, Maassen’s men won nine and lost only two of 18 away league fixtures this season. 

Recent results against Basel should add to the visitors confidence on Thursday. St. Gallen won three of their last four meetings, including a 3:0 victory in March, while they remain unbeaten in six encounters since October 2024. 

Head coach Massen is expected to make some changes to his first XI on Thursday. Diego Besio and Joel Ruiz are tipped to come into the first XI.
