A sixth-place finish was an outstanding return for Falkirk, a newly promoted side operating with one of the division’s smaller budgets. They secured a top-six place before the split, but the final league result - a 5-2 home defeat to Rangers - underlined how difficult it is to contain high-level attacking talent. 

The immediate concern is at the back. Manager McGlynn confirmed in July that first-choice goalkeeper Scott Bain and right-back Keelan Adams will miss the start of the league season. Adams underwent surgery after a previous injury failed to heal properly. That removes experience from two important defensive positions and makes organisation at set pieces especially significant. 

St Mirren’s survival came through nerve and resilience rather than a comfortable league finish. They ended 11th on 34 points, then drew 1-1 at Firhill and beat Partick 1-0 at home to stay up. 

League Cup form has demonstrated mixed productive attacking spells with defensive warning signs: they beat East Kilbride 4-3 after trailing 3-0, but lost 1-0 at home to Dunfermline last Sunday.

Declan John missed the East Kilbride match through injury, while Malik Dijksteel returned to the squad after recovering from a groin problem. Those updates leave John doubtful and Dijksteel available, subject to matchday confirmation. 

Saints can draw confidence from their two wins over Falkirk last season, but their defensive structure and stability must be tighter than it was during the dramatic East Kilbride recovery in the League Cup.
