In the ninth game of the knockout phase, Belgium and Senegal will face off in their first-ever H2H game to secure a 1/8 Finals duel with the better team from the USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina game. Belgium qualified for the knockout round as the first team from Group G, while Senegal secured their spot as one of the best 3rd-placed teams after finishing their Group with France, Norway, and Iraq with three points and a +2 goal difference.
Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this World Cup 1/16 Finals tie.
Belgium team overview
Belgium topped the group ahead of Egypt, Iran, and New Zealand, but had a lot of luck doing so, as many things had to go their way to secure it. They came to the tournament as one of the teams that could surprise, but we weren't really impressed by them. They showed some major deficiencies, especially when a team defends against them in a low block. We were surprised to see that because, in theory, they have personnel capable of unlocking the other team's defense. However, when a team plays them openly, we can see just how good they are.
Central defender Nathan Ngoy served his one-game suspension against New Zealand and will be available. We expect to see the 23-year-old back in the starting lineup, alongside Brandon Mechele.

Senegal team overview
Senegal barely secured the second phase of the tournament after losing the first two games to France and Norway. However, we must say they were competitive in those matches, but simply faced good teams and made some unforced mistakes. Then, in the last game, they won 5:0 against Iraq, but for much of the game, they did not look that great, especially considering Iraq received a red card in the 13th minute. However, when Pape Gueye, Iliman Ndiaye, and Nicolas Jackson entered from the bench, they looked significantly better, and we believe we could see some changes in the starting lineup compared to the last game vs Iraq.
Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy missed the last game against Iraq due to a knee injury sustained against Norway. As of now, the goalkeeper is set to miss the game, and we could see Mory Diaw in the starting lineup again.

Prediction
Belgium weren't great for this bet in the World Cup, as only one of their three games went over 2.5 goals. They have shown some surprising moments, failing to break the compact defenses of Iran and Egypt. However, we believe they will address that as they have too much talent up front. From time to time, they have magnificent offensive displays, and we believe it's the right time to shine.
Meanwhile, Senegal went over 2.5 goals in all of their games at the World Cup, with an incredible 4.7 goals per game! Even though their defense looks pretty good on paper, they have had big problems in the past, often allowing 3+ goals against good teams. But on the other hand, their offense is definitely capable of hurting Belgium with their mobile forwards, especially if Belgium commits too much on offense.
Considering all the above, we expect a high-scoring game, likely with both teams scoring.
3 Reasons why we should see three or more goals
- Belgium scored 2+ goals in nine of the past 14 matches across competitions
- Senegal went over 2.5 goals in five out of the past six games
- Senegal averages 4.6 goals per game in three World Cup games
Main prediction Belgium - Senegal
Over 2.5 goals
