One of the most interesting games of the last round of the Group phase will be between Uruguay and Spain. The South American team has won just two points thus far and desperately needs a win, while Spain has won four points and has more or less secured the knockout phase.
Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this World Cup tie.
Uruguay vs Spain Head to Head (H2H) stats
-
Spain
3 : 1
Uruguay
Friendly International
These teams have met a total of seven times, with their last meeting in 2013 at the FIFA Confederations Cup, when Spain won 2:1. In total, Spain won four times, while the remaining three games ended in draws.
Regarding the number of goals, five out of seven H2H games ended with three or more goals, while both teams scored in the same number of games (five).
Uruguay team overview
Uruguay recorded a surprising draw against Saudi Arabia in the first round (1:1) and then recorded an even more surprising one (2:2) against Cape Verde. In both games, they were a better team but simply couldn't finish the job. Their offense just couldn't convert the chances. That is something they have struggled with in the preparation period. Now, they have an incredibly tough job as they have to win all three points to advance. Considering they failed to win in the past six games across competitions, we can safely say that it will be a challenge.
After a 2:2 draw, coach Marcelo Bielsa spoke to the media. He said they were highly disorganized and that they could both win and lose the match. The experienced coach took responsibility for the defensive mistakes, saying he was to blame.

Spain team overview
Spain, the reigning EURO champions, came to the World Cup as one of the main favorites for the title. However, they opened the tournament with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, which was probably the biggest surprise of the World Cup. The Spaniards bounced back and performed well in the second match, beating Saudi Arabia 4:0. After watching their first two games, it was evident they were super-dependent on Lamine Yamal. To be fair, he played only the first half against Saudi Arabia, but that was more than enough to make an impact on the game.
Now, the situation for Spain is that they secured the knockout round even with a loss. With a win, they would clinch the top spot, but most likely with a draw as well.
For now, there is no official update on Yamal's injury. However, we believe the young star could be on the field for at least the first 45 minutes, just like in the Saudi Arabia game.

Prediction
Uruguay drew the first two games, and more importantly for our bet, we saw both teams scoring in those. So, if they could allow goals to Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, they will most likely allow it to Spain, which is among the best teams in the tournament. In the past 20 games, Spain have scored at least one goal on 18 occasions - 90%.
For us, the main question is whether Uruguay can score. They are in a must-win situation, and I believe they have more than enough talent upfront to score at least once. To be fair, they haven't shown that they are a team that can score too much in friendlies coming to the World Cup. Still, in the World Cup and the Copa America we saw them doing very well against very good teams and we expect them to score at least once.
Considering all the above, we believe that both teams to score is the safest option for this World Cup tie.
3 Reasons why both teams should core
- Both teams scored in four of Uruguay's last five games across competitions
- Spain scored in 18 out of the past 20 games
- Uruguay had a total of 4.03 xG in the first two games of the World Cup
