After a couple of solid seasons, the previous one was nowhere near the desired level for Newcastle, as they finished as a mid-table side. Most pundits don't see them in a better position than that heading into the upcoming year, especially after recent transfers and preseason struggles. Newcastle won only twice in seven friendly matches this summer. In the most recent outing, they lost after penalties against Strasbourg. That was the third defeat in a row for Matthias Jaissle's team. 

Newcastle have big problems in defense. They conceded 11 goals in the last five friendly matches. It is obvious Newcastle need reinforcements, and we should expect them to sign more defenders in the rest of the transfer window. 

Newcastle made big changes this summer. The most significant is the departure of manager Eddie Howe and the appointment of Matthias Jaissle. Also, the team left Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali, three players who were among the best last season. On the other hand, the most expensive Newcastle addition is Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim. Other signings are Amar Dedic (Benfica), Aladji Bamba (Monaco), Lukas Hornicek (Braga), Sean Steur (Ajax), and Ewen Jaouen (Reims). 

Newcastle will be without Joelinton and Valentino Livramento in Sunday's game. 

Liverpool are heading into the 2026/27 season with the highest ambitions. Last year, they finished fifth in the Premier League and surely expect more in the upcoming campaign. Liverpool's preseason was solid, with only two defeats in six matches. In the previous game, they won 2-0 against Como. 

Liverpool changed the head coach, too, this summer. After Arne Slot finished his tenure, Andoni Iraola, who made big successes with Bournemouth, will get the chance at the highest level. Also, the Reds left Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate. As replacements, they have Victor Munoz (from Osasuna), Jeremy Jacquet (Rennes), and Ronald Araujo (on loan from Barcelona). 

The Reds have big problems with missing players. They will be without Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike, Joe Gomez, Jayden Danns, Curtis Jones, and Giovanni Leoni on Sunday in Newcastle.
