Hull's promotion was an impressive turnaround after they had been regarded as Championship relegation candidates at the beginning of last season. However, their defensive numbers remain a concern. They conceded 66 goals in the Championship last season, one of the highest totals among the division's teams, and now face a significant step up in attacking quality. 

Sergej Jakirovic has overseen a major squad rebuild, with Hull bringing in more than 10 new players during the summer. Jack Butland, Hidemasa Morita and record signing Nobel Mendy are among the notable additions, while Liam Millar provides pace and attacking threat after featuring for Canada at the World Cup. However, Butland's injury has complicated the club's preparations. 

Hull's objective will probably be to remain compact, frustrate United and exploit transitions through Millar and their other attacking players. The main question is whether their defence can withstand sustained pressure.

United enter the campaign with considerably greater expectations. Michael Carrick has now taken charge permanently after guiding the club to third place last season and Champions League qualification. Bruno Fernandes remains the creative focal point after an outstanding campaign, while summer additions Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos strengthen the midfield. 

However, United have significant injury concerns. Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko and Mason Mount have all been reported as unavailable or major doubts, increasing pressure on Carrick's squad depth. 

The summer additions should nevertheless give United enough attacking quality. Bryan Mbeumo has impressed during pre-season and could operate centrally in Sesko's absence, with Matheus Cunha and Amad Diallo providing support around him. Marcus Rashford has also returned to the first-team picture following loan spells away from Old Trafford, although his long-term future remains uncertain.
