Lens head into the opening weekend with considerable momentum. Their 1-0 victory over PSG in the Super Cup was particularly impressive because they were reduced to 10 men after Kyllian Antonio's first-half dismissal, yet still defended their lead successfully. 

However, Lens will have to manage several absences. Thorgan Hazard and Kyllian Antonio are suspended, while Jonathan Gradit, Nidal Celik, Samson Baidoo and Jhoanner Chávez are listed among the injured. The departure of midfielder Mamadou Sangaré to Brentford for a reported £38.5m also removes an important option from the squad. 

Despite those issues, Lens possess enough quality and home advantage to make them clear favourites.

Auxerre's biggest storyline is the arrival of Will Still, who has taken over as head coach and begins his tenure with a challenging trip to one of the league's stronger sides. Their pre-season was mixed, providing little evidence that they have yet reached their best level. 

Injuries could make Still's task even harder. Marvin Senaya, Bryan Okoh, Sékou Fofana, Telli Siwe and Lasso Coulibaly are among the players currently unavailable, while Assane Dioussé is also sidelined. Defensive absences are particularly problematic against a Lens side capable of creating sustained pressure.

Auxerre will therefore probably prioritise defensive organisation and look to attack on the counter. Avoiding an early goal will be crucial if they are to take anything from the match.
