Spanish La Liga is one of the big leagues that started last weekend. In their season opener, Espanyol won 3:0 against Levante and will now face one of the title contenders, Real Madrid. Unlike Espanyol, Los Blancos did not play in the first round in order to give players some rest, as many of them played in the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this La Liga tie.

Last season, these teams met twice, with Real Madrid winning both H2H games by the same score - 2:0. As expected, Real Madrid has had much more success lately, winning eight out of ten H2H games, while Espanyol won the remaining two.
When it comes to the number of goals, five of the past ten H2H games ended with three or more goals, while both teams scored in four of those games.
Espanyol team overview
Espanyol had two very good seasons after their promotion to La Liga in 2024. The Catalan team finished 14th and then 11th last season. Last season, the difference between the European spots and relegation spots was only nine points, and Espanyol could have easily reached the top seven, but also could have been relegated. In the end, we feel that 11th place was adequate.
For this season, the goal should be to be somewhere around the middle of the table once again. Looking at the squad, we believe they are of similar quality and that staying in the league won't be a problem.
And indeed, in the first game of the season, they dominated Levante, beating them 3:0. After the game, coach Manolo González spoke to the media. He said it was important to start the season with a win, saying they played well and controlled the match. The coach said that when they play like that, they are capable of competing with anyone.

Real Madrid team overview
Real Madrid started a new era this year with Jose Mourinho's arrival. Los Blancos finished the last season trophyless, and a big change was due. Over the summer, we believe they improved massively, adding fantastic players such as Yan Diomande, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, and Carlos Espi. On the other hand, they haven't lost any of their key players. They are undoubtedly a much better team this season, at least on paper.
For the upcoming game, five players who missed the previous friendlies with injuries should remain sidelined: Raul Asencio, Eder Militao, Ferland Mendy, Thiago Pitarch, and most importantly, Rodrygo. According to the latest reports, Rodrygo should be sidelined at least for the 2026 calendar year.

Prediction
Espanyol started the season well, beating Levante 3:0. However, in the previous season, when Real Madrid was arguably weaker, Los Blancos still beat them 2:0 on both occasions. This season, Real Madrid are looking scary, and with Mourinho on the bench, we doubt they will drop points against Espanyol.
Also, looking at the preparation period, Real Madrid looked a lot better, as Espanyol haven't had a win against a solid team and eventually lost to newly promoted Coventry 3:1 and drew with two Championship teams, Middlesbrough and Burnley. On the other hand, Real Madrid won four games, mostly against good teams, and drew once with Fiorentina.
While we cannot put too much weight on friendlies, it still gives us some perspective on these teams. Considering the sheer quality of the teams, the previous H2H games, and all the above, we believe Real Madrid will win this La Liga tie comfortably.
3 Reasons why Real Madrid should win and cover the -1 AH spread
- Real Madrid won the previous two H2H games 2:0
- Real Madrid won four out of five friendlies
- Espanyol's total market value is only 120 million euros, compared to Real Madrid's 1.45 billion euros
