Morocco continue building toward the 2026 World Cup with a home friendly against Burundi on Tuesday. The Atlas Lions arrive as African champions and one of the most consistent national sides around right now, which sounds bold until you look at the numbers. Burundi, however, are not coming simply to make up the numbers. The Swallows have looked sharper in recent friendlies, even if the overall gap in quality still feels fairly obvious. On paper, this leans heavily toward Morocco. Football is rarely that tidy though, especially in end-of-season friendlies where rhythm can disappear quickly.

Africa Cup of Nations Qualifications
These nations have met only twice before, both during AFCON qualification. Morocco won both matches and finished the tie with a comfortable 4-0 aggregate scoreline. Burundi never really looked close in either contest, although those games came in slightly different circumstances.
Morocco team overview
Morocco’s most recent match came back in March, when Mohamed Ouahbi’s men squeezed past Paraguay in an entertaining 2-1 friendly. It was not flawless football, honestly, but it showed something this Atlas Lions side keeps producing almost every month now. Control. Calmness. Results.
The African champions are unbeaten in 26 matches across all competitions, with 21 victories and 17 clean sheets along the way. That sort of consistency is difficult to maintain, even for some of Europe’s biggest nations.
Friendlies seem to suit Morocco too. The North Africans have avoided defeat in 11 straight exhibition matches since early 2024, usually without needing to overwhelm opponents.
You look through the squad and the quality is obvious. Bounou adds authority in goal, Yassine never stops running down the flank, while Brahim Díaz and Mazraoui bring composure and invention in possession. Therefore, a strong Morocco display feels more likely than not.

Burundi team overview
Burundi head into this match with mixed momentum. The Swallows closed their World Cup qualifying campaign on a miserable four-game losing streak and, maybe more worrying, failed to score in any of those defeats. That run exposed the attacking limitations within Patrick Sangwa Mayani’s squad.
Still, recent friendlies have offered a little encouragement. Burundi responded with back-to-back 4-0 wins over Chad, although the level of opposition there matters and probably should not be ignored. Momentum helps confidence, however, Morocco represent an entirely different challenge.
Away form also remains a concern. The Swallows have lost three of their last four matches on the road, and defensive lapses continue appearing too often once pressure builds.
The 24-man squad mixes domestic players with talent based abroad, including striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana from Jeddah SC. Kevin Icoyitungiye is another name local supporters rate highly. Even so, Burundi may spend long periods defending deep in Salé.

Prediction
Morocco should have too much structure, pace and technical quality for Burundi here. Regragui’s side rarely lose control in these home friendlies, and the depth across the pitch still looks slightly intimidating for most African opponents. Burundi may stay compact for a while, perhaps even frustrate the crowd early on, but sustaining that resistance feels difficult. Once Morocco find rhythm through Yassine and Díaz, the spaces usually appear. A controlled 3-0 home win looks the most sensible outcome.
Three reasons we expect over 2.5 goals
- Each of the last two games of Burundi produced exactly four goals.
- Two of the last three games of Morocco produced over 2.5 goals.
- Morocco won the last two H2H meetings 4-0.
