Friendly International
Mexico and South Korea have met several times on the international stage, including at the FIFA World Cup. Their most notable meeting came at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where Mexico claimed a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Carlos Vela and Javier Hernández.
Their most recent head-to-head meetings came in international friendlies. Mexico claimed an entertaining 3-2 victory over South Korea in 2020, while the two sides played out another thrilling encounter last summer, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Mexico team overview
Mexico began their home World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa. Julián Quiñones opened the scoring before veteran striker Raúl Jiménez sealed the win, giving El Tri their first-ever victory in a World Cup opening match.
The hosts dominated large periods of that encounter, finishing with a clean sheet and a +2 goal difference that currently places them top of Group A.
However, Javier Aguirre faces an important selection issue. Central defender César Montes was sent off during stoppage time against South Africa and is suspended for this match. His absence removes one of Mexico's most experienced defenders and could force a reshuffle at the back.
The encouraging news is that key attacking players Quiñones and Jiménez looked sharp in the opener, while midfielder Erik Lira impressed with his distribution and creativity. Mexico will also benefit from another predominantly home-supporting crowd in Guadalajara.

South Korea team overview
South Korea produced one of the most impressive comebacks of the opening round. After falling behind to Czechia, goals from Hwang In-beom and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu secured a 2-1 victory and three crucial points.
The Koreans showed resilience and technical quality throughout the second half. Hwang In-beom was particularly influential, scoring the equaliser before providing the assist for the winner. Captain Son Heung-min and playmaker Lee Kang-in also played important creative roles as South Korea gradually took control of the match.
Unlike Mexico, South Korea enter the contest without any major suspension concerns. The squad appears close to full strength, and head coach Hong Myung-bo is unlikely to make significant changes after such a strong opening performance.
