Austria and Jordan begin their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaigns with a Group J clash in Santa Clara. While Austria enter the tournament as strong contenders to progress from a difficult group that also includes Argentina and Algeria, Jordan are preparing for a historic occasion as they make their first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup.
Austria team overview
Austria arrive at the World Cup - for the first time since 1998 - in excellent form under head coach Ralf Rangnick. Recent results highlight their momentum, with victories over Ghana (5-1), South Korea (1-0), and Tunisia (1-0) in international friendlies, after topping Group H with 19 points to secure direct qualification for the tournament following a 28-year absence.
The Austrians boast a strong core featuring David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer and captain Marko Arnautović. Rangnick's side have developed a reputation for intense pressing and quick transitions, making them particularly dangerous against teams that struggle to play through pressure.
Austria have, however, been dealt a blow by the absence of attacking midfielder Christoph Baumgartner, who will miss the tournament through injury. Nevertheless, the depth available to Rangnick means expectations remain high heading into the group stage.

Jordan team overview
Jordan's qualification for the 2026 World Cup represents the greatest achievement in the nation's footballing history. The Chivalrous Ones arrive in North America after reaching the final of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and continuing their rise under coach Jamal Sellami.
Preparation for the tournament has been challenging. Jordan were beaten 4-1 by Switzerland and 2-0 by Colombia in their final warm-up matches, conceding six goals across those two fixtures. However, prior to those defeats, they earned draws against Nigeria and Costa Rica, demonstrating that they can remain competitive against quality opposition.
The team's primary attacking threat is winger Mousa Al-Tamari, whose pace and creativity make him Jordan's most dangerous player in transition. Striker Yazan Al-Naimat is also expected to play a key role as Jordan seek to create chances on the counterattack. Encouragingly for Sellami, no significant injury concerns were reported following the Colombia friendly.

Prediction
A convincing victory would give Austria the perfect start in Group J before more demanding encounters against Algeria and Argentina. The Austrians managed to keep back-to-back clean sheets in their final warm up preparation matches against South Korea and Tunisia, indicating their ability to limit an opponent's chance creation.
Prediction: Both Teams to Score - NO.
Three reasons we expect BTTS - NO
- Austria prevented South Korea (1-0) and Tunisia (1-0) from scoring in their final two warm up matches.
- BTTS - NO has also landed in five of Austria’s last eight World Cup qualifiers.
- Jordan are on a five-game winless run across all competitions.
