Diego Simeone's side began the season positively with a 2-0 victory over Málaga, although the performance was not particularly convincing from an attacking perspective. Lee Kang-in marked his debut with a superb goal from the bench, while Alex Baena added a spectacular free-kick to secure the points. Atlético controlled the contest but struggled to produce consistent attacking fluency. 

The biggest talking point remains Julián Álvarez. The Argentine forward missed the Málaga game amid uncertainty over his future, with Barcelona reportedly interested, although Atlético insist that he remains part of their plans. Simeone suggested that Álvarez could return against Villarreal after needing additional training following the World Cup. 

Alexander Sørloth is another important absence. The Norwegian striker suffered a muscle contracture before the campaign and is expected to miss the opening matches. His absence leaves Simeone with fewer natural options in the centre-forward position. Ademola Lookman is set to lead the forward line once again.

Villarreal showed considerable character in their opening match, recovering from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Racing Santander. Pape Gueye and Nicolas Pépé scored within just over a minute before half-time as Villarreal demonstrated their attacking quality and depth. 

The match also represented Iñigo Pérez's competitive debut as Villarreal coach. His team dominated possession for long periods and created enough opportunities to potentially win, but defensive vulnerability was evident after conceding twice to a newly promoted opponent. 

Villarreal remain without Juan Foyth, who is recovering from a serious Achilles injury. Atlético loanee Alexander Sørloth is also unavailable to face his parent club, while other reported concerns include Alberto Moleiro and Gerard Moreno.
