2026 World Cup group stage predictions: New format & new rules

The Austrian Grand Prix is over, and it was a big victory for George Russell and Mercedes. The Brit returned to the top step of the podium for the first time since the start of the season.
Now, Formula 1 moves to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, one of the most iconic races on the calendar. In this preview, we'll take a closer look at the technical aspects of the circuit, the condition of the top teams, and our predictions for the race.

Silverstone is a fast and demanding circuit, regularly producing some of the best racing of the season. It features a lot of classic corners, such as Copse, Maggots, Becketts, and Stowe, where drivers carry huge speeds, and every small mistake can cost valuable time. At the same time, the infield includes several slower corners with heavy braking zones, making good traction on corner exit equally important.
Given the layout, teams are expected to run medium-to-high downforce setups, striking a balance between straight-line speed and stability through the rapid direction changes. Tyre management will also be crucial, as Silverstone is generally considered a front-limited circuit.
This will also be another Sprint weekend. That means instead of having several practice sessions to work on the car, teams get just one hour of practice before competitive sessions begin. That makes preparation much more difficult. Engineers must quickly find the right setup for the car, balancing top speed, stability and tyre management.
The Sprint format also means teams will have extra race laps on Saturday, which provides valuable tyre and strategy data before Sunday's Grand Prix. However, once qualifying begins, major setup changes are no longer allowed. If a team gets the setup wrong early in the weekend, drivers may have to live with it for the rest of the event.
Red Bull left Austria encouraged after a very competitive showing from Max Verstappen. The Dutchman came close to taking victory, and there is a strong argument that a different strategic call could have changed the outcome. Had Red Bull switched to the medium tyres earlier or covered the undercut, Verstappen may well have finished on the top step of the podium.
Silverstone should suit Red Bull even better. The circuit's high-speed corners play to the car’s strengths, while Red Bull's latest upgrades have clearly improved its overall performance. Verstappen is expected to be firmly in the fight for victory once again, making Red Bull one of the teams to beat this weekend.
The Austrian Grand Prix was a slightly disappointing weekend for McLaren, as the team lacked the outright pace to challenge Mercedes and Red Bull. However, Oscar Piastri once again maximised his package and produced an excellent drive to finish ahead of both Ferrari drivers.
Lando Norris had a more difficult race. Limited practice running due to technical issues left him on the back foot, and he is still using the previous specification of the Mercedes power unit battery. Even so, Silverstone should suit the McLaren much better. With the characteristics of the circuit and the strength of the Mercedes engine, Norris has every chance of fighting for a podium in front of his home crowd.
The Red Bull Ring produced one of Ferrari's weakest weekends of the season. The team struggled with tyre degradation and overheating throughout the race, with Charles Leclerc particularly affected by the issue. As a result, Ferrari never looked capable of matching the pace of the leading teams.
Lewis Hamilton showed slightly better race pace, and Ferrari even switched him to a three-stop strategy, but it failed to make a difference as he was unable to gain positions during the final stint. Silverstone has traditionally been one of Hamilton's strongest circuits, so expectations will naturally be higher this weekend. However, Ferrari still need to solve their tyre and energy management issues if they want to fight for a place on the podium.
Mercedes head to Silverstone full of confidence after another excellent weekend in Austria. George Russell returned to the top step of the podium, while Kimi Antonelli continued his impressive rookie campaign with another outstanding performance.
Antonelli arguably had the pace to challenge for victory, but an unfortunate pit stop at the wrong time cost him valuable track position. Even so, his race pace was among the strongest in the field. Silverstone should suit the Mercedes package well, and if the team can execute a clean race, both Russell and Antonelli have a realistic chance of finishing on the podium.
Our qualifying prediction for the British Grand Prix is Kimi Antonelli to take pole position. The Italian had a stronger pace than his Mercedes teammate in Austria and continues to show how comfortable he is on high-speed circuits.
1st place: Kimi Antonelli
Antonelli has been one of the quickest drivers in recent races, and Silverstone should suit both his driving style and the Mercedes package. This could be his breakthrough victory.
2nd place: George Russell
Russell arrives with plenty of confidence after winning in Austria. Racing in front of his home crowd, another composed drive should be enough to secure a second-place finish.
3rd place: Lando Norris
Norris is expected to bounce back after a difficult Austrian weekend. McLaren should be more competitive at Silverstone, giving the Brit a great chance to finish on the podium.
Racing Bulls look like one of the strongest midfield teams at the moment, and Silverstone could give them another chance to collect important points. Both drivers finished inside the top 10 in Austria, showing that the car has enough pace to fight at the front of the midfield.
If they can repeat that level of performance and avoid strategy mistakes, a double points finish is a realistic target.
