Formula 1 returns to Spain this weekend for the first-ever Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, following the decision to rename the race after Madrid took over the Spanish Grand Prix slot for the 2026 season. The event arrives on the back of another dominant performance from Kimi Antonelli, who claimed his fifth consecutive victory at Monaco.
The Mercedes driver now holds a commanding 66-point lead in the Drivers' Championship and looks increasingly difficult to stop. In this article, we analyse the leading contenders, potential dark horses, and the best betting opportunities for the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is probably the track Formula 1 teams know better than any other. It was here that most teams first began evaluating their new 2026 machinery during pre-season testing. It’s interesting to see how much progress has been made over the opening months of the campaign.
Unlike Monaco, Barcelona is a genuine high-speed, high-downforce circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency and driver commitment. Long corners such as Turn 3, Turn 9, and the fast final sequence through Turns 13 and 14 place enormous loads on both the cars and tyres. Teams are expected to bring Monaco-style downforce levels, but for a completely different reason: not to maximise traction, but to give drivers the confidence to attack these sweeping corners.
Barcelona is also a 64% full-throttle circuit, compared to just 44% at Monaco, placing far greater demands on energy deployment and recovery. Managing battery usage efficiently across the lap will be very important.
The Monaco Grand Prix was a disappointing weekend for Max Verstappen. A poor launch effectively ended his chances of fighting for victory before the race had properly settled. Fortunately for Red Bull, Isack Hadjar stepped up. Despite battling power unit issues throughout the race, the Frenchman delivered an impressive drive to secure his first podium finish of the season and his first since joining Red Bull.
Barcelona should provide a much more favourable test for Red Bull. The RB26 continues to benefit from what is widely considered the strongest power unit on the grid, giving the team an advantage on a circuit where drivers spend 64% of the lap at full throttle.
Verstappen has traditionally excelled at Catalunya, and the long straights combined with four Straight Mode zones should play to the strengths of the Red Bull package.
Monte-Carlo produced mixed emotions for McLaren. Lando Norris endured another frustrating weekend as ongoing reliability concerns left him managing a limited pool of power unit components. The situation has become serious enough that a grid penalty for a new power unit cannot be ruled out in Barcelona. On the other side, Oscar Piastri delivered a solid performance to finish fourth and collect valuable points.
The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya could suit the MCL40 much better than Monaco. McLaren has one of the most balanced cars in the field, combining strong mechanical grip with excellent high-speed downforce.
That should allow both drivers to attack corners such as Turn 3 and Turn 9 with confidence. If Norris avoids a grid penalty, McLaren should have the pace to challenge for a podium and potentially much more.
Neither Charles Leclerc nor Lewis Hamilton managed to secure a front-row starting position at the Monaco GP, making it difficult to challenge for victory around a circuit. Once the race got underway, it quickly became apparent that Ferrari simply did not have the pace to match the leading Mercedes cars.
Leclerc's afternoon ended in disappointment after running over broken tarmac and finding the barriers, while Hamilton spent most of the race fighting in the midfield rather than competing for a podium finish.
Barcelona may not be much kinder to the Scuderia. Ferrari's biggest strength remains its chassis and mechanical grip, but those advantages are less valuable on this circuit. The long full-throttle sections are likely to expose Ferrari's deficit to Mercedes and Red Bull.
Kimi Antonelli secured his fifth consecutive victory in Monaco, strengthening his position as the overwhelming favourite for the 2026 Drivers' Championship. With a 66-point advantage already in hand, it would take a dramatic swing in fortunes for his teammate George Russell to challenge him over the remainder of the season.
Russell's title challenge has all but disappeared after two consecutive races without scoring a point, while a series of penalties have only made matters worse. The Briton desperately needs a clean weekend to get his campaign back on track.
Barcelona should suit Mercedes extremely well. The team has consistently been one of the strongest outfits through high-speed corners this season, and the warmer conditions expected in Spain are unlikely to create the tyre management issues that have occasionally troubled rivals.
Kimi Antonelli has been the benchmark driver throughout the 2026 season, and there is little reason to expect that trend to change in Barcelona. The Mercedes driver arrives in Spain on the back of five consecutive victories, giving him all the confidence he needs heading into another weekend.
1st Place: Kimi Antonelli
Antonelli has been the standout driver of the 2026 season, winning five races in a row and consistently extracting the maximum from the Mercedes package. He remains the clear favourite heading into Barcelona.
2nd Place: Oscar Piastri
Piastri should benefit if teammate Lando Norris takes a grid penalty for a new power unit. McLaren's pace looks strong enough for a podium, and the Australian is well placed to capitalise.
3rd Place: George Russell
Russell's recent form hasn't been good, but Mercedes remain the strongest team on the grid. A cleaner weekend in Spain should allow him to return to the podium positions despite recent setbacks.
Pierre Gasly could be one of the best dark horse picks for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Alpine have been the strongest midfield team over the past few races, consistently scoring points and closing the gap to the leading four teams.
The characteristics of the Barcelona circuit should suit the Alpine package reasonably well, particularly through the fast corners where the team has shown encouraging pace this season. With several frontrunners still battling reliability concerns and potential grid penalties, Gasly may not need much luck to find himself fighting near the front of the midfield once again.
