F1 Austrian Grand Prix 2026: Predictions and betting preview

By Klimentijs Konevs | Published: 25 June, 2026, 15:05

Formula 1 heads to Austria this weekend following one of the most dramatic races of the 2026 season at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory of the year after championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical failure that forced him to retire. That brought his remarkable five-race winning streak to an end.

All eyes now turn to the Red Bull Ring to see whether Mercedes can bounce back immediately or if Hamilton's victory marks the beginning of Ferrari's resurgence. In this article, our team analyses the leading contenders, potential dark horses, and the best betting opportunities for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix.

F1 Austrian Grand Prix

Technical spotlight

The Red Bull Ring has built a reputation for producing some of the most entertaining racing on the Formula 1 calendar. Its layout may look simple, but it consistently creates close battles and plenty of overtaking opportunities.

The main reason is the circuit's design. Three long straights are separated by tight 90-degree corners, allowing drivers to stay close before making late moves under braking. These heavy braking zones often lead to wheel-to-wheel action and multiple overtaking attempts throughout the race, especially during the opening laps and after pit stops.

While much of the action comes at the end of the straights, the Red Bull Ring also features several medium-speed corners that reward precision and commitment. There is very little room for error, with grass and gravel lining the outside of many corners, ready to punish even the smallest mistake. Drivers who push beyond the limit can quickly lose time or find themselves beached in the gravel.

Team-by-team breakdown

Red Bull

Barcelona was another disappointing weekend for Red Bull. Max Verstappen eventually finished fourth, but in reality, he never looked capable of challenging for victory. The team were lacking the pace needed to fight Mercedes and Ferrari at the front.

Things did not go much better for Isack Hadjar. The Frenchman suffered a poor launch as yet another Red Bull Powertrains-powered car struggled to get off the line, leaving him on the back foot from the opening lap.

The Red Bull Ring should offer a much better opportunity for the team to bounce back. The circuit has traditionally suited Red Bull, and its layout removes one of the team's biggest weaknesses this season. Unlike Barcelona, there are fewer demanding high-speed corners where balance has been an issue, allowing Red Bull to focus on maximising its strengths under braking and on corner exits.

McLaren

Last Grand Prix was another encouraging weekend for McLaren, particularly on Lando Norris' side of the garage. The Briton finished just a few seconds behind George Russell's Mercedes, showing that the team's pace is continuing to improve.

For Oscar Piastri, it was a weekend to forget. The Australian never looked comfortable and was well off the pace throughout the event, making it one of his toughest performances of the season.

The Red Bull Ring has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Norris, and McLaren have also produced some strong results in Austria in recent years. If the team arrives with the right setup from the opening practice sessions, Norris should once again be in contention for a podium finish. The pace is clearly there. It is now about putting together a clean weekend from start to finish.

Ferrari

Ferrari are full of confidence after a dominant performance at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory of the season by more than 20 seconds, executing a perfectly judged three-stop strategy that allowed him to pull clear of the Mercedes drivers. More importantly, Ferrari finally had the outright pace to control the race from the front.

The result was a clear sign that the team's latest aerodynamic upgrades have worked exactly as intended. Ferrari looked more stable through the corners, managed its tyres well, and consistently delivered the fastest race pace throughout the afternoon.

Ferrari are expected to introduce an updated power unit for the Austrian Grand Prix, which could significantly reduce the horsepower deficit they have faced against Mercedes. If the upgrade performs as expected, Ferrari could arrive at the Red Bull Ring with arguably their strongest package of the year and every chance of fighting for another victory.

Mercedes

Barcelona marked the first Grand Prix Mercedes have failed to win this season. George Russell salvaged second place, but the biggest story came from Kimi Antonelli, whose race ended with his first power unit failure of the year. It brought the Italian's remarkable five-race winning streak to an abrupt end and raised the first real reliability concerns for Mercedes in 2026.

Before retiring, Antonelli had looked like the quicker of the two Mercedes drivers. He had already overtaken Russell on track and appeared to have the pace to challenge Lewis Hamilton before the mechanical issue brought his afternoon to an early finish.

The Austrian Grand Prix is not expected to be Mercedes' strongest race of the season, with the Red Bull Ring likely to favour some of their rivals a little more. Even so, the Silver Arrows remain one of the fastest teams on the grid, and if reliability issues stay away this weekend, both Antonelli and Russell should still be firmly in contention for victory.

F1 predictions this weekend

Qualifying and Pole Position

Charles Leclerc has traditionally performed well at this circuit, and Ferrari's impressive performance in Barcelona suggests the team now has a car capable of challenging at the front once again.

Leclerc has endured a few frustrating weekends recently, with incidents and poor fortune preventing him from converting strong pace into top results. Austria presents an ideal opportunity to put those disappointments behind him and reset his season.

Podium prediction

1st Place: Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton arrives in Austria full of confidence after his dominant Barcelona victory. If Ferrari's upgrades continue to deliver, he has every chance of carrying that momentum into back-to-back Grand Prix wins.

2nd Place: Kimi Antonelli

Antonelli was the fastest Mercedes driver in Barcelona before his retirement. If the Silver Arrows avoid another reliability issue, the championship leader should once again be fighting for victory.

3rd Place: Charles Leclerc

The Red Bull Ring has traditionally suited Leclerc's driving style, and with Ferrari's recent improvements, Austria looks like the perfect place for him to bounce back after several frustrating weekends.

Dark Horses

Pierre Gasly is once again an appealing dark horse for the Austrian Grand Prix. The Alpine driver continued his impressive run of form with a seventh-place finish in Barcelona.

The Red Bull Ring could suit the Frenchman well, particularly if Alpine can continue extracting consistent performance from its package. Unlike several of the frontrunning teams, Alpine are not dealing with the reliability concerns that have recently affected Mercedes-powered rivals, giving them a better chance of putting together a clean race.
