A place in the European qualification playoffs is on the line in Belgium on Saturday as Standard Liege takes on Sporting Charleroi.

Placed at the top of the Pro League 25/26, Qualifying Round playoffs, Standard will go into the end-of-season European playoffs if they win this weekend. Visiting Sporting are no longer in contention after failing to win their last two league fixtures.

Past encounters have been evenly balanced and a competitive encounter should be on the cards this weekend.

Standard Liege

Standard Liege team overview

Standard Liege face their final Qualifying Round playoffs contest knowing a win will secure their place in the European qualification round.

The hosts have found some strong form in recent weeks, recording three wins from their last four matches, including a vital 2-1 victory at Westerlo last weekend. After falling behind early on, goals from Timothee Nkada (18', pen.) and Rafiki Saïd (41') secured an impressive comeback win.

An improved run of form in the second half of the campaign has seen Liege win seven and lose just two of their last 15 league fixtures.

While Vincent Euvrard's side have done their best work in away fixtures this season, they will take confidence from a 2:1 win against Leuven earlier this month, and a 3:1 success against Sporting Charleroi last October.

Head coach Euvrard has three confirmed absentees this weekend. Josué Homawoo (Achilles), Mo El Hankouri (ankle) and René Mitongo are all ruled out through injury.

Charleroi

Sporting Charleroi team overview

Sporting Charleroi after failing to win back-to-back home fixtures in the past week. After a 1:0 home defeat against Westerlo, Mario Kohnen’s side were then held to a 1:1 draw against OH Leuven on Tuesday.

Having fallen behind in the first half, Aurélien Scheidler’s 48th minute strike ensured a share of the spoils at Stade du Pays de Charleroi.

The visitors have found some improved form in the latter part of the season, but are no longer in contention to progress to the European qualification playoff. Charleroi won three successive fixtures before their recent setbacks at home. Before those victories, Sporting had failed to win 12 of 12 games since the start of February.

Head coach Kohnen has just one player unavailable ahead of the trip to Liege. Massamba Sow is set to miss out with an unspecified injury issue.

Prediction

Standard Liege must win to secure their place in the European playoffs, and with the greater incentive, I expect the hosts to prosper on Saturday.

A home win is my preferred pick at Maurice Dufrasne.

Three Reasons Why We Expect Standard Liege to Win

  1. Standard Liege won 3 of their last 4 matches
  2. Standard Liege won 2 of their last 3 matches against Sporting Charleroi
  3. Sporting Charleroi lost 10 of their last 17 matches
