Standard Liege takes on RAAL La Louviere in a Pro League contest on Friday evening.

The hosts remain unbeaten after sharing ten goals across entertaining draws against Cercle Brugge and KV Mechelen. In contrast, RAAL have endured a difficult start, suffering successive defeats against Anderlecht and Gent.

Both teams have scored in all four of their combined league fixtures this season, suggesting another entertaining contest should be expected in Liege.

Standard Liege

Standard Liege team overview

Standard Liege return to home comforts after throwing away a two-goal advantage in a dramatic 3:3 draw against KV Mechelen last weekend.

Bernard Nguene opened the scoring before Adnane Abid struck twice to give Standard a commanding 3:1 lead. However, two late Myron van Brederode penalties denied Vincent Euvrard’s side their first victory of the season.

The home side have now conceded leads in both of their first two games of the season.  The Reds were  held to a 2:2 draw by Cercle Brugge in their opening fixture, despite leading 2:1 until the closing stages.

A mixed pre-season campaign saw Liege win four and lose three of seven summer friendlies. Defensive issues remain a concern with the home side leaking two goals or more in four of their last six matches, including each of their three most recent fixtures.

High-scoring outcomes have been frequent, with both of Standard’s league matches producing BTTS and over 2.5 goals. Over a longer period, nine of Standard’s last 12 Pro League games finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

While Standard finished last season in decent form, remaining unbeaten in five of their last six matches, a poor home record is a worry. Liege won just four of 15 games at Stade Maurice Dufrasne during the 25/26 campaign.

Head coach Euvrard has no new injury issues. Josue Homawoo remains unavailable because of an Achilles tendon injury.

Adnane Abid should retain his place in the forward line after scoring twice against Mechelen.

RAAL La Louviere team overview

RAAL La Louviere make the short trip to Liege after a frustrating 2:1 home defeat against Gent last weekend.

Mustapha Isah gave Ed Still’s side an early advantage, but goals from Momodou Sonko and Ibrahima Cisse secured the points for the away side.

RAAL suffered the same fate on the opening weekend. Isah put the visitors ahead against Anderlecht, only for the Brussels side to respond with two second-half goals.

The visitors have now failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last ten competitive fixtures. Each of their last four Pro League matches since the end of last season finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

Mouhamed Belkheir is the only confirmed injury absentee for RAAL. The forward remains sidelined with a knee issue.

Mustapha  Isah should continue to spearhead the visitors after scoring both of RAAL’s league goals this season.

Prediction

Standard can rarely be trusted to keep a clean sheet, and while favourites to claim victory, a competitive contest should see chances at both ends.

BTTS is my best bet, while I also expect Standard to edge a high-scoring encounter on Friday evening.

Three Reasons Why We Expect BTTS

  1. Standard Liege have seen BTTS in 9 of their last 12 matches (Pro League)
  2. RAAL La Louviere have seen BTTS in their last 4 matches (Pro League)
  3. RAAL La Louviere have seen BTTS in 3 of their last 4 matches against Standard Liege
