The first leg was the first competitive meeting between the clubs, so there is little historical head-to-head data to consider. Rapid took the lead in Edinburgh, with Serge-Philippe Raux-Yao heading home in the 30th minute, before Hearts responded with two goals shortly after half-time. However, Rapid managed to equalise through Nikolaus Wurmbrand in the 79th minute.

Rapid Wien team overview

Rapid enter the second leg in excellent form. Before the 2-2 draw in Edinburgh, Johannes Hoff Thorup's side had won seven consecutive competitive matches, including an extraordinary 8-0 Bundesliga victory over Grazer AK. Their Conference League qualifying campaign has also been impressive, with victories over Santa Coloma and Paide producing a 15-4 aggregate score across four matches.

The Austrian club has scored freely throughout the campaign, while their possession-based approach was again evident in the first leg. Rapid's squad does, however, have some injury concerns. Dominic Vincze, Martin Ndzie, Daniel Nunoo, Claudy Mbuyi and Andrija Radulovic were listed as unavailable ahead of the first leg. Centre-back Jakob Schöller is another concern after suffering a thigh injury against Grazer AK, with the club confirming that he would require a period away from intensive team training.

Nikolaus Wurmbrand could again prove important after scoring from the bench in Edinburgh, while Ercan Kara, Matthias Seidl and Yusuf Demir provide significant attacking quality.

Hearts

Hearts team overview

Hearts arrive in Vienna after a difficult but encouraging European campaign. They were eliminated from Europa League qualifying by Benfica after a 7-2 aggregate defeat but subsequently showed considerable character against Rapid, recovering from 1-0 down to lead 2-1 before conceding late.

Their domestic form has also improved, with victories over Dundee United and Inverness following the heavy defeat in Lisbon. The postponement of their league trip to Falkirk means Hearts have had no domestic fixture between the two Rapid matches, giving Wouter Vrancken's players additional preparation time.

Hearts continue to have defensive injury problems, with Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Stephen Kingsley, Craig Halkett and Eduardo Ageu listed among their absentees ahead of the first leg. James Wilson will be one to watch after his spectacular goal in Edinburgh, while Cláudio Braga remains another major attacking threat.

Prediction

Rapid's home advantage and outstanding scoring record make them favourites. Hearts have already demonstrated that they can trouble the Austrians, but Rapid's excellent form in the early stages of the new season and attacking quality should ultimately prove decisive.

Prediction: Rapid Wien to Win.

Three reasons we expect Rapid Wien to Win

  1. Strong home advantage and momentum. Rapid have been excellent in Vienna, including an 8-0 Bundesliga win over Grazer AK immediately before the first leg.
  2. Superior control and chance creation. Despite the 2-2 draw in Edinburgh, Rapid controlled 60.7% possession and created the greater chances.
  3. Rapid's recent scoring form is difficult to ignore. They have scored 16 goals across their last four competitive matches, including a 2-2 draw in Edinburgh in the first leg, a 4-1 away win vs Paide, 2-0 at home to Paide and the 8-0 demolition of Grazer AK.
