Marseille enter the new season under Bruno Génésio and have enjoyed an encouraging pre-season. They defeated Yamoussoukro FC 3-0, Nîmes 2-1, Al-Shahaniya 3-0 and Athletic Club 3-1 before facing Atlético Madrid in their final major preparation match. That run represents four victories in five friendlies and 11 goals scored, suggesting that the attacking unit has quickly adapted to Génésio's approach. 

The summer has nevertheless brought significant squad changes. Marseille have lost important attacking players including Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Hamed Traoré, Timothy Weah and Facundo Medina have arrived as part of the rebuilding process. 

There are no unavailable Marseille players currently listed by major news sources, leaving Génésio with a strong squad to choose from for the opening Ligue 1 fixture.

Strasbourg's preparation has been considerably less convincing. Their opening friendlies ended in heavy defeats to Sporting CP (7-0) and Blackburn Rovers (2-0), followed by losses against Brighton (4-3) and Elversberg (5-2). Their defensive problems are therefore a massive concern ahead of a difficult trip to Marseille.

The club have also undergone substantial changes under new manager Hugo Oliveira. The key departures were of goalkeeper Mike Penders and striker Emanuel Emegha, while several players were initially absent following the World Cup. On the positive side, Strasbourg have added Gio Reyna, who arrives from Borussia Dortmund and gives Oliveira another technically gifted attacking option. 

Joaquín Panichelli is expected to miss the match with a cruciate ligament injury, with his return currently projected for December.
