The Conference League final arrives in Leipzig on Wednesday night with Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano both chasing a moment that would probably rank among the biggest in their modern history. Palace ended the Premier League season without much sparkle domestically, yet Europe has told a very different story for Oliver Glasner’s side. Rayo, meanwhile, arrive with stronger momentum and perhaps a little more balance. Bookmakers still lean toward the Eagles, although this final feels far less straightforward than the odds suggest at first glance.

Wednesday’s final will mark the first ever meeting between Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano in any competition. Interestingly, the Eagles have never faced Spanish opposition competitively before, while Los Franjirrojos are also stepping into unfamiliar territory against English opponents. That small sense of unpredictability adds another layer to an already intriguing final.

Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace team overview

Crystal Palace may have finished lower in the Premier League than many supporters expected, however the European campaign has softened plenty of that frustration. The Eagles knocked out Fiorentina and Shakhtar Donetsk in tense ties, and those nights at Selhurst Park especially carried real energy. You could sense the squad growing into the tournament as it progressed.

Still, Glasner’s side do not come into the final in perfect shape. Palace are without a win in four matches and, maybe more concerning, have conceded at least twice in each of those games. Defensive concentration has looked shaky at times, particularly late in matches when legs start fading.

Jean-Philippe Mateta remains central to Palace’s attacking threat even if his Conference League numbers are not explosive. Ismaïla Sarr, on the other hand, has delivered consistently in Europe with nine goals already. Expect both to start in attack as the Eagles try to stretch Rayo’s back line early.

Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano team overview

Rayo Vallecano’s route to the final arguably looked steadier than Palace’s. Los Franjirrojos avoided the playoff drama after finishing fifth during the League Phase, then handled Samsunspor and Strasbourg with impressive control.

The quarter-final against AEK Athens was another story entirely though. Iñigo Pérez’s men won the first leg 3-0, then nearly threw everything away in Greece after a chaotic 3-1 defeat.

Even so, Rayo travel to Leipzig in excellent form. The Madrid side are unbeaten in nine matches and finished the La Liga season with consecutive wins over Villarreal and Alavés. That run has given the squad a certain calmness which matters in finals more than people sometimes admit.

Alexandre Alemão should return to the starting side after being rested recently. The Brazilian has scored four Conference League goals this season and remains the most reliable focal point in attack for Pérez’s side.

Prediction

Crystal Palace look slightly better equipped for the occasion, even if Rayo Vallecano arrive with stronger recent momentum. Finals can become cagey and strange for long spells, however the Eagles probably carry more individual quality in decisive moments. Glasner’s side also tend to create chances even when performances feel untidy. Rayo should still cause problems going forward, especially on transitions, but Palace’s attacking depth could prove decisive late on. A narrow 2-1 win for the London club feels about right.

Three reasons we expect both teams to score

  1. Palace finished only two of their last eleven games without conceding.
  2. Rayo Vallecano failed to keep a clean sheet in three of their last
  3. Four of the last five games of Palace in Europe produced goals at both ends.
