Ligue 1 features 18 teams, with each playing the other clubs home and away, meaning there's a total of 34 rounds of matches. The first four teams will play in next season's Champions League, the 5th and 6th-placed clubs qualify for the Europa League, while the team that finishes in 7th place will compete in the Europa Conference League.

Paris Saint-Germain are the strongest team by far, and it's hard to see anyone stopping them, especially after PSG won Champions League titles in a row. The likes of Lille, Monaco, and Olympique de Marseille will give a 100% effort to spoil the party, but realistically, they'll fight for silver medals or at least a place in the UCL.

The battle to avoid relegation will be much more interesting, though. Metz and Nantes were relegated last season, while Troyes and Le Mans came up from Ligue 2. Both of these clubs now have an uphill task of staying in the top division, but Angers, Le Havre, Brest and Paris FC aren't safe either.

Race for the second place

The odds of PSG winning another Ligue 1 title are always going to be short, as they sit at 1.12 ahead of this season. The more interesting market is the race for second place. Marseille look our best bet to finish runners-up after strengthening a squad that already has Champions League experience.

The biggest move among the challengers has been Marseille's €18 million purchase of Facundo Medina from Lens, adding a proven defender to Bruno Génésio's side. Timothy Weah has arrived from Juventus for €14 million, giving Marseille another versatile attacking option.

Monaco remain the principal threat. They have lost Maghnes Akliouche to PSG for around €50 million, a major blow, but responded by signing Matthis Abline from Nantes for €25 million. Ansu Fati has also joined from Barcelona for around €11 million.

Lens should again compete near the top after finishing second last season. Yacine Titraoui has reinforced their midfield for around €8 million, but selling Mamadou Sangare will be a huge blow to their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.

Prediction: Marseille to finish second; Monaco will be third.

Ligue 1 relegation predictions

Le Mans look the most likely candidates for direct relegation after returning to Ligue 1 for the first time in 16 years. They earned promotion alongside Troyes, but the step up from Ligue 2 is substantial, and their squad lacks the depth and top-flight experience of most rivals. Their opening fixture against Brest is already a difficult test.

Troyes are our second pick for the drop. They were excellent in Ligue 2, but staying up requires a different level of consistency, against established sides. Their opening game against Paris FC will show us what their real expectations should be.

Angers are our pick for 16th spot and the relegation play-offs. They survived last season despite financial restrictions and finished 13th, but there has been little room for major investment. Their summer has included free-agent arrivals such as Branco van den Boomen, while their biggest sale, Sidiki Chérif, brought in €18 million from Fenerbahce. That suggests another season of operating on a tight budget.

Prediction: Le Mans and Troyes for direct relegation. Angers will be heading to the relegation play-offs.
