H2H stats

This isn’t the first time these two clubs have met on the continental stage. Sturm Graz and Nottingham Forest previously faced off in the 1983/84 UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Forest edged the first leg 1-0 at home but Sturm hit back with a 1-0 win in the return leg. In the end, Forest advanced to the semi-finals after finding the net in extra time.

SK Sturm Graz

Sturm Graz team overview

Sturm Graz enjoyed a fine spell between September and early October, stringing together four straight wins - their best run since August 2024. Their momentum has stalled in recent weeks, with three defeats and no wins from their last four outings.

Even so, there’s still room for optimism. Sturm have been excellent at home in Europe, winning each of their last four European matches on their own turf. That run includes their 2-1 victory over Rangers, which remains their only win in this season’s Europa League campaign.

On the injury front, Belmin Beganovic is still out with a muscle issue and won’t be fit in time for this clash. Meanwhile, Tochi Chukwuani misses out through suspension after his red card against Celtic on Matchday 3.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest team overview

It’s been a turbulent season for Nottingham Forest, who have already parted ways with Nuno Espírito Santo and Ange Postecoglou. New boss Sean Dyche is still trying to steady the ship, having managed just one win in his first ten games in charge.

There was, however, a glimmer of hope last weekend as Forest fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, a result that could give the squad a much-needed confidence boost.

Their away record in Europe remains a worry, though -  just one win in their last eight on the road across European competitions.

Dyche has a few injury headaches to deal with, too. Oleksandr Zinchenko missed the draw with United last weekend due to injury and remains unavailable. Ola Aina and Dilane Bakwa will also not recover in time for this week’s trip to Austria.

Prediction

Both teams have been inconsistent, so predicting a winner is tough. But one thing seems likely and that is goals. Sturm Graz have conceded at least twice in four of their last five matches, and Forest have done the same in five of their last six. Expect an open, entertaining contest. Predicted score: 2-2.

Three reasons we expect at least three goals in this game

  1. Forest have kept a clean sheet in only one of their 14 games this season.
  2. Sturm Graz finished only two of their last nine games without conceding.
  3. Two of Forest’s three Europa League games this season have produced 4+ goals.
