While the European Club Qualifiers are on the way, the teams from the best European leagues are playing friendly matches to prepare for the upcoming season. On Saturday evening, Sporting CP will face off against Monaco. Sporting CP won friendly games against Celtic and Strasbourg with a combined goal difference of 11:1, while Monaco only played against Saint-Priest and won 5:2.

Let's break down the game and find the best possible bet for this club friendly match.

Sporting CP

Sporting CP team overview

Last year, Sporting CP had a solid season but eventually finished trophyless. They finished 2nd in Liga Portugal, six points behind FC Porto. However, with a 25-7-2 record, we can safely say that would be enough in most seasons to win the title. So, they cannot be too unhappy with their performance. However, they missed a big opportunity to win the Taça de Portugal title as they lost to Torreense in the final after extra time.

Throughout the offseason, the club has been pretty active, with several players leaving and arriving. The latest addition to the team is Ibrahima Ba, a central defender who arrived from Famalicao for 21.5 million euros.

The players who participated in the previous World Cup mostly missed the friendly matches to get some extra rest: Rui Silva, Goncalo Inacio, Ousmane Diomande, and Luis Suárez. Maxi Araújo played limited minutes. It is still undecided whether we will see those players in this game, but Sporting proved they are capable of winning these friendlies even with a heavily rotated squad.

Monaco

Monaco team overview

After finishing 2nd and 3rd in the 2023/24 and 24/25 seasons, Monaco had a pretty bad campaign last year. They finished 7th in Ligue 1, barely securing Europe (Conference League). To be fair, they were solid in the Champions League, reaching the 1/16 Finals, where PSG eventually eliminated them on a 5-4 aggregate.

During the offseason, the club lost their first- and second-best left full-backs (Caio Henrique and Kassoum Outtara) and replaced them with Nazinho, who arrived from Cercle Brugge. Besides him, Ansu Fati also arrived at the club, along with central defender Sadibou Sane.

Maghnes Akliouche, Denis Zakaria, Lamine Cmaara, Folarin Balogun, Takumi Minamino, and Stanis Idumbo missed the previous game and will most likely remain sidelined.

Prediction

Sporting CP went over 2.5 goals in both friendlies as they won 4:1 against Celtic and 7:0 against Strasbourg. They have been really great offensively in these games, and we do not think they will stop against Monaco, which just allowed two goals against Saint-Priest, a team that is not even remotely close to Sporting CP. Also, last season, Sporting CP were the best team in Liga Portugal for this type of bet, considering they went over 2.5 goals in 71% of their games.

Monaco are arriving at the game after a 5:2 win over Saint-Priest. They have also been great for an over 2.5 goals bet in their domestic league last season, going over the mentioned line in 22 out of 34 rounds - 65%. Only Rennes had more such games.

Considering all the above, we expect at least three goals in this club friendly match.

3 Reasons why we should see three or more goals

  1. Sporting went over 2.5 goals in both friendlies
  2. Sporting CP scored 11 goals in two friendlies this offseason
  3. Monaco won their only friendly game 5:2 vs Saint Priest
