Real Madrid will look to return to winning ways in LaLiga when they welcome Rayo Vallecano on Saturday night. José Mourinho's side made an excellent start to the 2026/27 domestic campaign, winning their first three matches, but suffered a 1-0 defeat against Real Betis in their most recent league outing. Madrid subsequently responded with a 2-1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan, giving them some momentum ahead of this Madrid derby.

Madrid have also won three of the last four home league meetings with Rayo by a 2-1 scoreline, including February's encounter at the Bernabéu. Rayo have historically struggled particularly badly at this venue, with their only victory at the Bernabéu coming back in 1996.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid team overview

Madrid have taken nine points from their opening four matches, with their most impressive league results coming against Real Sociedad (4-1) and Málaga (4-0), complemented by a narrow 2-1 victory over Espanyol.

The Real Betis defeat, however, was particularly frustrating because Madrid created opportunities but failed to convert, with Kylian Mbappé also missing a stoppage-time penalty.

In terms of personnel, Madrid continue to deal with several injuries. Eder Militão, Ferland Mendy and Rodrygo were among the absentees against Betis, while Tchouaméni, Endrick, Raúl Asencio and Thiago were also unavailable at that stage.

Eduardo Camavinga, Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler were expected to be available for the Rayo fixture after being suspended for the Champions League opener.

Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano team overview

Rayo have experienced a mixed opening, currently sitting in the lower half of the league table, with a particularly poor away record of two defeats from two.

Their latest 3-2 victory over Racing was encouraging, however. Sergio Camello scored twice and provided an assist, despite Rayo eventually being reduced to ten men. Camello has therefore emerged as a major attacking threat, while Unai López has been particularly important creatively.

Unfortunately for Beñat San José, Rayo travel to Madrid with significant selection problems. Jorge de Frutos and Fran Pérez are suspended, leaving the team without its two principal right-wing options.

Prediction

Rayo's fighting spirit and Camello's current form could make this more competitive than the league table suggests, but the visitors' defensive problems and depleted squad are major concerns. Madrid have considerably greater attacking quality, a dominant historical record and home advantage, while they should be determined to respond positively after the Betis defeat.

Still, Rayo have already proven that they can score against one of Spain's giants away from home, as demonstrated by their 5-2 defeat to Barcelona, while Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of their four LaLiga fixtures this season.

Prediction: Both Teams to Score (BTTS).

Three reasons we expect BTTS

  1. Rayo scored twice in a 5-2 defeat to Barcelona away from home.
  2. Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in three of their last four LaLiga fixtures.
  3. BTTS has landed in three of the last four head-to-head meetings at the Bernabéu.
