Qatar begin their second FIFA World Cup campaign and first-ever World Cup appearance achieved through qualification rather than host status when they face Switzerland in Group B. Switzerland arrive at the tournament with considerably more World Cup experience, having qualified for the finals on a regular basis over the last two decades, while Qatar will be eager to prove that their rise in Asian football was no one-off.

Friendly International
There is very little history between these nations. Qatar and Switzerland have met only once before, in an international friendly played in November 2018. On that occasion, Qatar secured an impressive 1-0 victory away from home thanks to a late goal from Akram Afif.
Qatar team overview
Qatar arrive at the World Cup on the back of a historic qualification campaign, becoming the first Qatari side to qualify for a World Cup through the established AFC qualification pathway. The Maroons sealed their place at the tournament with a decisive 2-1 victory over the United Arab Emirates in October 2025.
Much of Qatar's attacking threat continues to revolve around Akram Afif, one of Asia's most influential forwards in recent years. Alongside experienced names such as Almoez Ali and Hassan Al-Haydos, Qatar possess enough creativity to trouble most opponents.
However, their recent form has not been particularly encouraging. Julen Lopetegui's men are winless in their last six international matches, including recent friendlies against the Republic of Ireland (0-1 defeat) and El Salvador (0-0 draw). When it comes to facing European opposition, the narrow loss to Ireland could provide a useful indication of what to expect on Saturday. That said, Switzerland should be regarded as a more established and competitive national team than the Irish.
As of the latest squad announcements, no major injury concerns have been reported among Qatar's key players heading into the tournament. Lopetegui has the vast majority of his preferred squad available for selection.

Switzerland team overview
Switzerland once again arrive at a major tournament with expectations of reaching the knockout stages. Under Murat Yakin, the Swiss have developed into one of Europe's most reliable international sides, blending experienced leaders with emerging talent. Captain Granit Xhaka remains the heartbeat of the midfield, while Breel Embolo, Dan Ndoye and Xherdan Shaqiri provide attacking quality.
The Swiss completed their World Cup preparations with a 1-1 draw against Australia. Dan Ndoye was on target, and although Switzerland controlled large portions of the match, they were unable to convert their superiority into victory. Nevertheless, the result extended a generally positive run of form heading into the tournament, with the Swiss having lost just one of their last 14 international fixtures, including both qualifiers and friendlies.
The Swiss camp appears relatively healthy. No significant late withdrawals have been reported, allowing Yakin to select from an experienced and balanced 26-man squad.

Prediction
Switzerland's experience at major tournaments and defensive solidity make them deserved favourites to open their World Cup campaign with three points. However, considering their recent attacking performances - having seen under 2.5 goals in two of their last three friendlies - and Qatar's equally solid defensive displays against the Republic of Ireland and El Salvador, this could ultimately prove to be a low-scoring encounter.
Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals Total.
Three reasons we expect Under 2.5 Goals Total
- Under 2.5 Goals has landed in two of Switzerland’s last three international fixtures.
- Under 2.5 Goals has been the outcome in four of Qatar’s last five international matches.
- Qatar have failed to score in three consecutive international fixtures.
Main prediction Qatar - Switzerland
Under 2.5 goals
