After winning their opening games last week, Hertha Berlin and Heidenheim will face off against each other in the second round of the German 2. Bundesliga. Hertha beat Bochum 1:0 away from home in their season opener, while Heidenheim beat Osnabrück at home in a highly entertaining match that ended 4:3.

Interestingly, these teams have never met in a league match. Their only two official matches were in the DFB Pokal, with Hertha winning 2:1 in 2024 and 3:2 in 2016.

Besides those two DFB Pokal games, these teams met only once more, in a friendly match in 2012, which Hertha won 2:0 as well.

Hertha Berlin

Hertha Berlin team overview

Hertha Berlin suffered relegation in the 2022/23 season and failed to return in the following three seasons. Their best finish was last season, when they finished 7th - 11 points away from the playoffs and direct promotion as well. The main issue last season was a really bad home record, as they were one of the rare teams that won more points away from home than at home.

Over the summer, the club lost several key players, including their top goalscorer, Fabian Reese, their best goalkeeper, and several more players from the starting eleven. On the other hand, they only added one new player (Oluwaseun Adewumi) on loan. On paper, they look much worse than last season.

This season started with a 1:0 win over Bochum. Unfortunately, their starting right full-back, Julian Eitschberger, suffered an injury and had to leave the field a few minutes before the end of the game. However, it seems that the injury isn't too serious, and he might be ready for the Heidenheim game.

Heidenheim

Heidenheim team overview

Heidenheim spent the last three seasons in the Bundesliga. In the season before the last, they barely secured survival via the relegation playout. Last season, they were atrocious for most of the season and finally started playing good football a couple of months before the end of the season. For this year, the goal is to secure promotion, and the odds see them as the second or third favorite to go up, with the odds ranging between 2.6 and 3.75.

In the season opener, against Osnabrück, winger Christian Conateh suffered an injury. The 30-year-old came off the bench but had to leave after only seven minutes and will most likely remain sidelined for the upcoming game. Moreover, Leart Paqarada, Mikkel Kaufmann Sorensen, and Adam Kolle will most likely remain sidelined with their injuries.

Prediction

Both teams opened the season with wins, but we believe that Heidenheim showed a lot more, especially on the offensive end.

Also, a massive factor for this bet is the fact that Hertha lost several key players from last season and did not add anyone to replace them. They tried to replace those with young players from their U21/18 teams, and we doubt that will work. To be fair, they did start the season with a win, but we weren't particularly impressed with how they played, and we believe they were a bit lucky to earn all three points.

Moreover, Hertha Berlin were one of the teams that did not do too well at home last season. In fact, playing at home was a massive disadvantage for some reason, considering they won 7% fewer points and scored 32% fewer goals there!

Considering all the above, we believe that Heidenheim are simply a better team and should win on the road in this 2. Bundesliga tie.

3 Reasons why Heidenheim should (AH 0) win

  1. Hertha lost several key players from last season and failed to add replacements
  2. Heidenheim's total market value is around 45% bigger
  3. Hertha were unconvincing in their first game of the season, despite the win
