Hertha Berlin suffered relegation in the 2022/23 season and failed to return in the following three seasons. Their best finish was last season, when they finished 7th - 11 points away from the playoffs and direct promotion as well. The main issue last season was a really bad home record, as they were one of the rare teams that won more points away from home than at home. 

Over the summer, the club lost several key players, including their top goalscorer, Fabian Reese, their best goalkeeper, and several more players from the starting eleven. On the other hand, they only added one new player (Oluwaseun Adewumi) on loan. On paper, they look much worse than last season. 

This season started with a 1:0 win over Bochum. Unfortunately, their starting right full-back, Julian Eitschberger, suffered an injury and had to leave the field a few minutes before the end of the game. However, it seems that the injury isn't too serious, and he might be ready for the Heidenheim game. 

Heidenheim spent the last three seasons in the Bundesliga. In the season before the last, they barely secured survival via the relegation playout. Last season, they were atrocious for most of the season and finally started playing good football a couple of months before the end of the season. For this year, the goal is to secure promotion, and the odds see them as the second or third favorite to go up, with the odds ranging between 2.6 and 3.75. 

In the season opener, against Osnabrück, winger Christian Conateh suffered an injury. The 30-year-old came off the bench but had to leave after only seven minutes and will most likely remain sidelined for the upcoming game. Moreover, Leart Paqarada, Mikkel Kaufmann Sorensen, and Adam Kolle will most likely remain sidelined with their injuries.
