Hamburger SV vs Mainz prediction 06.09.2026 | Bundesliga

Hamburger SV returned to the Bundesliga last season after seven years in the second tier. After successfully avoiding relegation, Merlin Polzin's team entered the 2026/27 campaign with hopes for another step toward mid-table. Hamburger SV opened the season with a comfortable 3-0 cup victory over Verl, but suffered a 2-0 away defeat to Borussia Dortmund in their Bundesliga opener last weekend. The visitors had some promising moments and created enough opportunities to make the game more competitive, but poor finishing ultimately prevented them from taking anything from the match.

Hamburger SV should be significantly stronger than last season. On the final day of the summer transfer window, they added Zakaria El Ouahdi (from Genk), Fabio Vieira (Arsenal), and David Moller Wolfe (Wolverhampton). All three players should have a big role in Hamburger SV this season and could start on Sunday afternoon. 

Hamburger SV have some problems with missing players. Warmed Omari, Miro Muheim, and Alexander Rossing-Lelesiit are unavailable for Sunday's game against Mainz. 

Mainz are one of the Bundesliga's most established mid-table sides. After finishing tenth last season, we should expect a similar outcome for the 2026/27 campaign, too. A few weeks ago, in the cup, Mainz demolished Krieschow 9-0. However, in the Bundesliga opener last weekend, Urs Fischer's team played only 0-0 at home against Paderborn. Mainz entered that match as clear favorites, but the visitors defended well and deservedly came away with a point. Fischer's side now face a tougher challenge away in Hamburg, where securing all three points should be considerably more difficult.

Mainz are one of the rare teams that didn't sign any players late in the summer transfer window. The most significant move is probably Andreas Hanche-Olsen's departure to Chicago Fire. 

Mainz have injury problems, too. They will be without Benedict Hollerbach, Eric Martel, Paul Nebel, and Silas, who are injured and will not play on Sunday in Hamburg. Also, Dominik Kohr is questionable, and his status will get clearer closer to kickoff.
