Elche face Real Sociedad on Monday evening as both teams look to improve on slow starts to the campaign.

The hosts have collected only one point while conceding nine goals across their opening three La Liga matches. Sociedad have also struggled for consistency, picking up only one win from four games, but remain unbeaten in their last eight encounters against Elche.

That commanding H2H record and Elche’s defensive problems should give Pellegrino Matarazzo’s side plenty of confidence on Monday.

Elche team overview

Elche return to the Estadio Martínez Valero after a hard-fought 3:2 defeat against Racing Santander at El Sardinero.

Martín Anselmi’s men found themselves three goals behind at half-time following a superb Yassir Zabiri hat-trick.

Buba Sangaré and Fer Niño gave Elche hope with two quick goals after the interval, but the newly promoted side were unable to complete a remarkable comeback.

Despite enjoying 60% possession and registering 18 attempts, Elche produced only 1.03 expected goals in another defensively vulnerable display.

Los Franjiverdes began their campaign with a 1:1 draw at Deportivo La Coruña before suffering a painful 5:0 home defeat against Barcelona. Those results leave Elche winless and with nine goals conceded from three fixtures.

Anselmi has four expected absentees on Monday. Fer Niño, Thomas Lemar, Adam Boayar and Yago Santiago are all expected to miss out for the home side.

Deadline-day arrival Rubén Sánchez could make his debut after completing a move from Espanyol.

Real Sociedad

Real Sociedad team overview

Real Sociedad make the trip to Elche after being held to a goalless draw by Celta Vigo on Thursday.

La Real created the better opportunities but were unable to find a breakthrough in a contest lacking quality in the final third.

That result followed a 2:1 home victory against Espanyol. Ander Barrenetxea opened the scoring before Orri Óskarsson struck the decisive second-half goal to secure Matarazzo’s first competitive win of the campaign.

Sociedad had previously suffered away defeats against Real Betis and Real Madrid. Four points from four matches leave the visitors in the lower half of the LaLiga standings.

The visitors have struggled in defence this year, failing to keep clean sheets in 14 of their last 15 matches. Twelve of those games finished with both teams on the scoresheet.

Pellegrino Matarazzo could make some changes to his first XI after Thursday’s demanding contest against Celta. Orri Oskarsson, Takefusa Kubo and Luka Sucic are among those pushing for recalls to the first XI.

Jon Pacheco, Álvaro Odriozola and Pablo Marín are expected to remain unavailable through injury.
