The most recent meeting was a pre-season friendly in July 2025, when Bolton won 2-0. However, the last competitive Championship meeting between the clubs was back in February 2019, when Preston won 2-1.
Bolton team overview
Bolton arrive after a mixed start to competitive action. Their pre-season included a 2-1 defeat to Dunajska Streda, a 3-1 victory over Oldham Athletic and an encouraging 0-0 draw against Premier League opposition Everton.
However, Bolton also suffered a setback in their 1-0 Carabao Cup first-round defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, with Xavier Simons being sent off just before the hour mark, which completely changed the complexion of the game in Sheffield Wednesday’s favour.
The main concern is attacking depth. Schumacher has repeatedly acknowledged that his squad still requires reinforcements to compete effectively in the Championship, while recent reporting has highlighted concerns about Bolton's limited spending power and lack of proven goalscoring options.
As mentioned, midfielder Simons was sent off for violent conduct and is therefore suspended for the Preston game, removing an important midfield option.

Preston team overview
Preston's preparations have also been somewhat inconsistent. They lost 1-0 to Stockport County in their final pre-season friendly before drawing 1-1 with Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup first round, eventually progressing 4-3 on penalties after Jusef Erabi's late equaliser.
Manager Paul Heckingbottom has also had to deal with uncertainty surrounding captain Ben Whiteman, who has reportedly been attempting to force a move away from Deepdale. His potential absence would leave Preston without one of their most experienced midfielders.
Preston will nevertheless have the advantage of greater Championship experience, having remained in the division for 12 consecutive seasons. New signing Alfie Devine, reportedly acquired for around £6 million, is among the players expected to add greater creativity to a side that finished 14th last season.

Prediction
This should be a competitive and relatively cautious opening-day derby. Bolton's home advantage and defensive organisation could make them difficult to beat, but their attacking depth remains a question mark, while Preston have considerably more Championship experience. With both sides having struggled for goals during their most recent preparations, a draw looks the most plausible outcome and it should also suit an under 2.5 goals betting angle.
Prediction: Under 2.5 Goals.
Three reasons we expect Under 2.5 Goals
- Recent meetings have generally been low-scoring. The last two head-to-head meetings have produced under 2.5 goals.
- Both sides have shown limited attacking output in their latest competitive matches: Bolton lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday in the Carabao Cup, while Preston drew 1-1 with Huddersfield.
- A cautious opening-day approach is likely. This is a Lancashire derby and Bolton's first Championship campaign after promotion, so avoiding an early defeat could take priority over committing large numbers forward.
Main prediction Bolton Wanderers - Preston North End
Under 2.5 goals
