Millwall vs Newcastle prediction 08.09.2026 | EFL Cup

Last season was the best for Millwall in the 21st century, but they failed to win promotion to the Premier League. Alex Neil's team finished third in the Championship, but lost on the first step of the playoffs against Hull. Most pundits see Millwall in mid-table in the 2026/27 season, but the fans hope their team can defy the odds again. At the start of the campaign, the team from the Den was excellent, winning five of the last seven matches. In the previous game, Millwall won 4-0 at home against Bolton. The hosts had significantly better goal-scoring chances and eventually picked up another valuable victory. 

The previous week was challenging for Millwall. They had two consecutive defeats, sold Femi Azeez, probably their best player, to Brighton, and have a lot of injuries. Because of all of that, Alex Neil hoped for a reaction from the squad in the game against Bolton, and after a big victory, we should assume Millwall got back on track. 

Millwall have a long list of injured players. They will be without Jenson Metcalfe, Mihailo Ivanovic, Mathis Servais, Lukas Jensen, Alfie Doughty, Casper De Norre, Luke Cundle, and Tristan Crama on Tuesday night. Also, Massimo Luongo, Kyrell Lisbie, Ryan Leonard, and Joshua Coburn are questionable. 

After a disappointing 12th-place finish in the Premier League last season, Newcastle hopes to return among the best teams in England. The Magpies are solid at the start of the 2026/27 campaign with four games in a row without defeat. In the most recent outing, Newcastle played 2-2 at home against Bournemouth. The hosts trailed for much of the game and struggled to create clear-cut chances, but they eventually managed to rescue another point.

Newcastle's manager, Matthias Jaissle, commented on what was missing in a draw against Bournemouth. He said, "We couldn't match Bournemouth's intensity in the first half and conceded twice. That's something you could avoid. But I'm proud of the team for showing the reaction."

William Osula, Joelinton, and Dan Burn are injured and are unavailable for the EFL Cup clash at the Den.
